A. has been selected for testing a new low-cost electronic notepad being built around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of the electricity of current computer chips
B. have been selected to test a new low-cost electronic notepad being built around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of the electricity used by current computer chips
C. has been selected to test a new low-cost electronic notepad to be built on a new class of green microchips, which are also power-stingy and which use a fraction of the electricity used by current computer chips
D. have been selected for testing a new low-cost electronic notepad being built around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of the electricity of current computer chips
E. has been selected to test a new low-cost electronic notepad being built around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of the electricity used by current computer chips

A group is singular hence eliminate B,D.

Eliminate C for change of meaning - testing will only be done on something that has been built or being built, also unless it is built we dont know how much electricity it uses.
in A and E , looking at the end of sentence we'll notice E correctly compares electricity used by the new chip to that used by current computer chips.

E is correct.

In one of the subject verb questions I've solved way before, there was a sentence which said "a variety of "plural noun" are" as the right answer. Does anybody remember? How come "are" is used instead of "is"? Thats what had confused me and made me select choices with plural verbs.. Please help.

Re: A group of students in an Indian village has been selected [#permalink]
Hello

I understand Why E is correct and I also understand the collective noun vs quantity noun subject-verb agreement.

My question is that is the following construction in option C correct:
"which are also power-stingy and which use a fraction of the electricity" -> is this acceptable. Who is the 2nd which referring too? If it is referring to microchips then shouldn't which be next to microchips.

Another question is in option E:
E. has been selected to test a new low-cost electronic notepad being built around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of the electricity used by current computer chips-> I understand that being here is used as a verb-ing modifier and its modifying notepad. However, my question is that is the use of a comma between green and power-stingy correct? Shouldn't there be an and? I see that its the same construction in other answer choices also. What role is the comma playing here?

Appreciate the input.

A quick question, in the later part that refers to 'a new class of green, power-stingy microchips', shouldn't we have 'uses' instead of 'use'? It does refer to the 'class of microchips' and not just the 'microchips'.

1. Group of students - singular --->B, D are out.
2. In C: "which are also power-stingy" - what kindof construction it? Why to use it? "green, power-stingy microchips" - that is good
3. In A: "microchips that use a fraction of the electricity of current computer chips" - it seems like these microchips suck on current chips - it has no sense.

4. E is good.

I removed E for following reason:
E. has been selected to test a new low-cost electronic notepad being built around a new class of green, power-stingy microchips that use a fraction of the electricity used by current computer chips->
that used after Microchips refers to Microchips which is plural. how can we use that here
