yes that was what i expected.
but I was incorrect according to GMAT Prep.
they answered
true

does anyone have an explanation?
or could it be that i found a mistake in their program?

I agree with harshavmrg... in this problem the number of self-check unlimited lanes increases as the average customer age decreases, hense negative correlation. hope this this helps.

Sorry I don't see it.
take a look at the number of unlimited:4
the number stays the same but the age changes.

or take a look at the number 3.56.
between 3.56 and 4 we have a rise in the number of isles but also a rise in the age.

unless you mean that for every same number of isles we calculate a separate age average
and then compare...?

this inversly proportional relationship has to apply to most of the cases in order to be called negatively correlated, but does not have to be in 100% cases (unless they meant perfect negative correlation, but they didn't ask for that)...

great thanks!

I was thinking that the case was that it didn't have to be
100% but it seemed a bit odd to me.

Hi, in practical terms, the negative corelation is mostly calculated by drawing a grafh of two values. so, if u draw a graph here you can see a trend in the graph for negative corelation. there may be 1 or 2 values going here and there(not following the trend), but as long as you can see that trend it shows the corelation is present. you can refer to IR guide by gmat pill(free download) as it explains the corelation concept.

Negative Correlation – This is when one value goes up and the other value goes down
in a fairly predictable manner.

infact here is just the case :)
