27M re-applicant from Canada
730 (Q48, V42) GMAT
3.0 engineering GPA that made applications very difficult
4.5 experience in marketing (5.5 at matriculation)

Want to say congrats to all the admits!

And wanted to say good luck to everyone who didn't get the news they wanted today. Last year, when I got WL'ed in R2 and subsequently dinged things seemed pretty grim. I took a lot of inspiration from threestripes epic thread to help me through the journey. I hope good news is on the way soon!

Any R1 applicants receive any message thus far from Duke. Any changes in the online application portal. Mine just says application submitted. Hope applications submitted on deadline day also count....

Yes, submissions on the deadline day count towards that round, and yes, some people have already heard back from adcom saying their apps are under review: see this post for the email -- duke-fuqua-2013-calling-all-applicants-134412-380.html#p1136130

All you can do now is wait for that email or for adcom to let you know that something is missing from your file. It's only been 1 week since the deadline so no need to panic yet.

I got Dinged too. Was too shocked and disappointed to come and update my status.

Really clueless on what to do. Maybe my age(24) was a big decisive factor. Need to start looking at some lower ranked schools now :(

Congrats to all the admits. I really wished to be a part of Team Fuqua. Sucks!!

I've been a silent member for quite some time, but would like to jump in and give my two cents on my application strategy if it'd help anyone out there : )

stats:
GMAT 700 (49Q 38V)
GPA 3.5
6 years w/e in healthcare research (applied to HSM)
strong recs and EC's
female

For my essays:
- short term goals I was very modest/realistic. I specifically looked at what companies in my area of interest recruit at Fuqua and what kinds of positions students historically were successful in landing and, most importantly, spent a lot of time thinking about which of these positions would make sense in context of my long term goals (researched companies and leaders in the field I admire to see how they got where they are now). I also reached out to second year students and frankly asked them if they felt my short term goals were realistic given their experience with recruiting. This is a process that we'll all have to go through our first years anyway, so made sense to do it with my application : )
- long term goals I was quite ambitious, but very honest with where I truly wanted to be 10+ years from now. I do think that being very honest about my long term goals translated into passion during my interview (he said so as much!) so i'd encourage being honest with yourself and not write what you think they want to hear.
- random 25 I used this opportunity to really show my personality. I felt this was particularly important in my case as my long term goals are in non profit and I wanted to demonstrate that my values/passions my entire life align appropriately with my goals. I think that it's very easy to sound "fake" when people claim they want to work in non-profit so I'd definitely encourage all you non profit folks to let your passion shine through on this one. 2/25 points, I used to describe instances at work where I exemplified teamwork/leadership. And yes, I did use humor.
- why fuqua i'm not sure what to say about this essay, as it is highly personalized for each person, but I can say that i poured tons and tons of research. I made sure the adcom recognized how much research i did by citing students I talked to, and detailing student's post grad experience that i'm inspired by, how i would contribute, what leader of consequence and team fuqua mean to me and why i fit with those mottos, talking about particular research cores i'd get involved with (CASE), citing research by professors that I'm inspired by and why I'd want to collaborate/learn under them, etc. It sounds like a lot, but I just made sure that it was very consistent with my goals and top 25.

Re: Duke (Fuqua) 2013 - Calling All Applicants [#permalink]
i called duke adcom today to express my interest for the school (as a waitlister) and get some information the WL process and seek input on my profile. The adcom lady was very busy so she did not provide too much juicy information. However, she told me that WL decisions are typically made by May. this information is contradictory to what i have heard.

my main question is that: are the WL applicants measured against applicants of the next round and considered in equal footing? or are WL applicants only used as bench players to fill in spots?

True, while WL decisions are typically made by May, they still keep some people on through the summer to make sure any and all last-minute seats that open up are filled. If you're one of those lucky people, then you would hear your decision any time from May through August.

I have no clue about this since I'm not on the adcom though I think it's reasonable to guess that WL-ers are evaluated against everyone in the subsequent round, not just the waitlist.

hi aerien, thank you for your response. I thought many of us WLers would get admitted/dinged during deadlines of later rounds, instead of May? I am pretty confused now

You can be admitted with the R1, R2, or R3 decisions. R3 decisions come out in May. If you don't hear back by May and still choose to be on the waitlist, you could be waiting until August. Hope that clarifies things! :)

Hi,

I got wait-listed without interview. Does Fuqua ask you for any essays while wait-listed or do they give you any opportunity to actively influence your wait-list status?

Brief profile:
International student - Indian
GMAT - 740
Undergrad - Engineering.Different system of gradation but translates to around 3.33
W.E. - 4 years in Technology (programmer) and Consulting (tech)

read the FAQ provided by the adcom. Fuqua welcomes additional information so by all means try to get additional letter of recs/essays to bolster your chances :-D
