Could someone give the correct answer plz? Does the topic relate with "claim"?

For me,

"Are" is 100% that Cats = Best pets
"Make" is less than 100% that Cats = Best pets

Thanks in advance!

Choose E.

E. make the best pets - Clearly convey the meaning.
C. are the best pets - Subjunctive form used, thus avoid are.

@kingb- pls provide OA & OE

Thanks!!

I will go with tunyturtle and embrace C. When you claim something, you are vociferous about, cocksure about it. B declares that Cats are the best and there is no second word about it. On the contrary, when something makes something, there is somewhere a tinge of inabsoluteness. Like we say, although he is not the best of the runners, he somehow made it to the post. Or like we say, Bill wasn’t the best of the people, but somehow made the grade solely by luck. So, meaning wise, C is indeed the best one.

I will really appreciate if anyone can confirm the correct answer.

As far as i am concerned both C and E are good, but i will select C.

Hi Vinnil

C is not correct because:

(1) This question uses subjunctive form.
The form is: Bossy verb + that + Subject + bare form of the verb.
Bare form of verb "are" is BE.

For example:
We demand that Peter BE / IS here (not "is here")
We propose that the school DISBAND / DISBANDS

(2) Intended meaning: "make the best pets" is correct idiom and reserves the original meaning.

Thus, only E is correct.

Hope it helps.

When there is a use of That in the sentence please note the answer are the best pets is not the correct choice. That is used to give an idea about the claim by cathy. Subjunctive mood with the verb in bare form. Bare form is simple present with an exception of adding an extra s to the word and using are, is or am.

So i go with E

Pqhai if that was a part of the underlined statement will our answer shift to C or because of the claim(bossy verb) we will still stick with E.

Hi farhanc

As far as I understand, your question is: If there is not "that" after "claim", can option C be correct?
I would say there are two 100% correct idioms:
X Claim that Y do Z
X claim to be able to do Y

However, "X claim (without "that") Y is/are Z" is suspect, according to Manhattan GMAT - sentence correction. So I cannot say the structure "X claim Y is/are Z" is correct or not.

But because this question has "that" in the non-underlined part, so only E is correct.

Hope it helps.

I disagree, claims is in the subjunctive tense, but is not a bossy verb.

I thought bossy verbs, like demanded, require "be" but that subjunctive non-bossy verbs only require that it be plural, which "are" is

Am I correct or totally crazy   ?

I would love to hear your opinion on this. I chose E but I don't find any elimination criteria for C.

Quote:
To agree with the present-tense predicate "claims," the dependent clause must also be present-tense "make," not "made" (A). "Could be" (B) and "are" (C) alter the sentence meaning. "Make of" (D) is not a valid construction in this sentence structure, makes no sense, and means nothing.

Since this question is clearly not from a reputable source, I wouldn't recommend worrying about it at all.
