I don't understand why E it's wrong

because B correctly modify Amstrong and E simply has no sense.

If you read the entire sentence with choice E doesn't comunicates anything at all

Now I hope is clear

Correct Choice is B

A) doubtful whether having all the …… is correct.

B) correct choice. Grammatical usage of in spite of. Obeys parallelism In spite of x and y (noun Noun)

C) in the spite of is not idiomatic. Of his illegally taking is ungramatical and awkward

D) by the time changes the intended meaning and wrongly suggests that He was the winner of the race untill he was taking steroids.

E) despite being … not correct usage.

a) Having all the allegations thrown at him concerning taking steroids
b) In spite of the many allegations made against him concerning illegal steroid use
c) In the spite of lots of claims of his illegally taking steroids
d) By the time all the allegations had been made concerning steroid doping
e) Despite being constantly accused to take the steroids

How could be correct usage of 'Despite' in the current question ? Use of Despite will make sentence short and simple.

In my opinion being is redundant in that choice.

Having all the allegations thrown at him concerning taking steroids and his fight against
testicular cancer, Lance Armstrong has remained Tour De France’s leading cyclist with
seven consecutive wins.

b) In spite of the many allegations made against him concerning illegal steroid use
-- > To analyse the sentence, is is that correct to say that: "In spite of many allegations (that were) made against him concerning illegal steroid use...."

e) Despite being constantly accused to take the steroids ==> "Being" is redundant but still grammatically correct, right? In addition, as I know, GMAT prefer Despite than "In spite of" b/c the former is more economic.

Can anyone help to clarify? Thanks :)

I think the structure “Despite being” is true. The problem is the usage of “accuse”. The prevalent structure often is “accuse doing sth”. Im not sure.

Between B & E, I did not eliminate E because of despite but because of meaning.

b) In spite of the many allegations made against him concerning illegal steroid use
Looks fine to me
e) Despite being constantly accused to take the steroid
Now, this gives a meaning that Lance A was being accused of steroid as well as his fight against cancer. Also, the usage of 'being' is usually not preferred in Gmat barring few conditions, hence I went ahead with B.
