Proper parallel construction is in Choices B and E

E uses Having been which is an +ing modifier it should modify the subject of the clause... It illogically says neuclear testing is doing the job of signing

hence left with B-My choice

I am going with B

IMO Straight forward B

Here is the OE,

Nuclear testing on the planet is regulated by the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban-Treaty, which was signed in 1996 by 71 states and prohibits all nuclear explosions, disallows scientific research, and is providing guidelines for proper handling of radioactive material to protect the environment.


(A) which was signed in 1996 by 71 states and prohibits all nuclear explosions, disallows scientific research, and is providing guidelines for proper handling of radioactive material to protect the environment.

The phrase “is providing guidelines ….” is not parallel in structure to “was signed in 1996 by 71 states,” “prohibits all nuclear explosions” and “supports scientific research.” All the list elements should have parallel structures.

(B) which was signed in 1996 by 71 states and prohibits all nuclear explosions, disallows scientific research, and provides guidelines for proper handling of radioactive material to protect the environment.

CORRECT. The phrase “provides guidelines ….” is parallel in structure with “was signed in 1996 by 71 states,” “prohibits all nuclear explosions” and “supports scientific research.” All the list elements are parallel and the sentence does not contain any other verb/tense error.

(C) which, had being signed in 1996 by 71 states, prohibits all nuclear explosions, disallows scientific research, and guidelines for proper handling of radioactive material to protect the environment.

The verb construction “had being signed” is awkwardly constructed and grammatically incorrect.

(D) which was signed in 1996 by 71 states prohibiting all nuclear explosions, and disallowing scientific research and the radioactive material’s proper handling guidelines to protect the environment.

Using the verb-ing form “prohibiting” just after the “states” incorrectly implies that the states are prohibiting “all nuclear explosions”; the treaty is the one which is doing the “prohibiting”.

(E) having been signed in 1996 by 71 states and prohibits all nuclear explosions, disallows scientific research, and provides guidelines for proper handling of radioactive material to protect the environment.

First, the modifier introduced by the word “having” is grammatically incorrect; verb phrases must be preceded by a relative pronoun such as "which." Moreover, the modifier “having been signed in 1996 …” is not parallel with verb phrases “prohibits …, disallows …, and provides….”

(D) Rather than accept the throne of Kapilavastu, Lord Buddha went towards the path of complete awareness to see whether he could achieve a state of enlightenment, having been sent by his inner instincts.

CORRECT. This choice uses the construction “X rather than Y” to correctly compare the parallel active verbs “accept” and “went.” The uncertainty about reaching India by travelling west is correctly indicated by the word “whether.”

However, in this question you stated that passive (was signed) is parallel with active verbs (prohibits) Could you please elaborate?

Hi hfiratozturk,

Good question, for parallel structures the verb tenses need not be in the same order.

Consider this sentence -- Obama was born in the USA and serves as the 44th president of the country.

Question no. 42 OG12 is a very good example of this.

which is always used to refer to the subject before it. This is a question of parallelism. The treaty does 3 things X,Y , and Z. X,Y and Z have to have the same form. Here X=prohibits;Y=disallows. Both X and Y are action verbs. Hence Z should also be the same. Eliminate A,C and D. Between B and E, B is not a coherent thought. Treaty having been signed n 1996 by 71 states and -> This is incorrect. Now i don't know if having been is correct or not , but i will eliminate this on incorrect thought alone.

Could you please clarify:

The construction "X rather than Y" requires parallelism between X and Y, but the original sentence pairs an active verb ("accept") with a passive one ("was sent"). Second, the use of "if" in this context is incorrect. "if" is used only to introduce conditional clauses (e.g. “if X, then Y”). Here, "whether" should be used instead of “if” to indicate uncertainty about achieving a state of enlightenment. GMAT prefers “if” to be used as a conditional and “weather” to express uncertainty about certain event.
