Last year's class at Cambridge was 150 people and Oxford's was 191, so class sizes do fluctuate from year to year. Additionally, higher quantity does not obviously imply higher quality. In fact, I would argue for the opposite.

I'm also not sure there is such a thing as a "mainstream" one year MBA to compare these programs with. In other words, it's hard to determine which one is more "orthodox". I'm not sure how you arrived at the Said~ Insead equation. Finance, rather than consulting is Said's strength in my opinion and INSEAD is much bigger and more international.

Both Said and Judge offer a chance to do an internship. If you compare their most recent career reports, Judge's superior performance is apparent. WomeMBA - did you consider the fact that Cambridge may have offered you a scholarship (since they have more to offer versus Said)? Or perhaps your company is paying for your MBA?

(Disclaimer: I will matriculate at Cambridge this fall)

Hi there - to be honest, I wouldn't make the money a point in my Judge vs. Said decision-making process so I did not consider this element at all. I am in a situation that makes studying in the UK "sort of" a bargain so a scholarship wouldn't be able to move me in one direction or the other.

Actually I'm trying to go to Kellogg if I can gather the money (here money does make a difference as we're talking about 180K$) so for me it's not so much about Judge vs. Said but an extremely awful lot of money (Kellogg) vs. a lot of money (Said). Cambridge and Oxford are similar costs but I'd prefer Said anyway so I didn't see the point in doing the JBS interview. After all I felt that it was very fair to leave more options for others if I had already taken a decision between Oxford and Said, doing the JBS interview would have felt like trying to get more recognition without any specific purpose or need.

I agree in general with you but a couple of comments: first, the "mother university" of Harvard is Cambridge not Oxford, but what happened nearly 400 years ago doesn't really matter anymore. :-D My serious disagreement is that hardly can Cambridge be considered a better university that Oxford. They are very similar institutions competing for the best faculty and students.

In what I agree 100% with you is that these MBAs are very different and each are tailored for different people:
  • Saïd's is very orthodox, large, and with specific courses every term similar to an undergrad degree.
  • Judge's is heterodox, small, and you need to see the programme as a 1-year degree rather than 5 separate periods. It is a genuine general management degree

I think that the best analogy is Saïd~INSEAD and Judge~IMD.

Thank you. in regard to Oxford and Cambridge, it is known and almost in all major rankings and publications that Cambridge is stronger than Oxford in particular to pure science and contribution to the modern technical civilization.

A better university is not measured solely by its technical departments. If that were the case Caltech, MIT and ETHZ would be the best universities in the world. Oh well, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. Anyway, good luck in the process! :)

No, no. I didn't mean INSEAD and Oxford have similar strengths in particular areas. I mean the structure of the programs (i.e. curriculum structure) are similar.

Look:
https://www.sbs.ox.ac.uk/degrees/mba/Pages/outline.aspx
https://mba.insead.edu/the-insead-mba/co ... iculum.cfm

Both have very strict boundaries around periods. You take courses during a period, the period finishes. Then you move on to the next. Similarly, there are not many projects outside lectures or activities that overlap throughout more than one period. This is exactly how degrees are usually understood, both undergrad and postgraduate, and this is how MBAs are structured in most places. A disadvantahe of this approach is that business is not like this. Although you have to multitask, hardly ever all the activities have the same deadline and the same priority and then once they are done you get to have a fresh start.

Now:
https://www.jbs.cam.ac.uk/mba/programme/index.html
https://www.imd.org/programs/mba/program ... /index.cfm

Judge, besides all the lectures has Venture, Consulting and Capstone projects, and leadership seminars. IMD doesn't even have lectures structured in the traditional way. Instead all the activities are coordinated by learning blocks. So in one block you get lectures, projects, seminars, etc. This balancing act is closer to reality.

This is why I think Said=INSEAD=orthodox while Judge=IMD=heterodox. I am not saying one is better. I think both suit different personalities and different goals. Judge forms round managers while Saïd more specialised, albeit more techincally-abled workers.

You seem to be well informed, however, please allow me to disagree with you regarding to Oxford and Cambridge universities. University of Cambridge is better than University of Oxford by most measures. Caltech, MIT, and ETHZ are all great academic institutions, but university of Cambridge has the superiority in advancing the human knowledge throughout the years. It is very difficult for many universities to compete with Cambridge due to its long history and its significant contribution to all fields of science. The most accurate academic ranking nowadays is the chinese one of ARWU, which always put Cambridge ahead of Oxford.

Why is is the best ranking? What does it measure?

The most accurate due to its idea of origin, this ranking was a result of the project that established by the chinese government through the Shanghai Jiao University to understand and measure the educational systems in the world in order to pick the best practice for china and then the ranking emerged. The main criteria they use is the output of the research, affiliated nobel laureates, the impact (scientifically, socially, and economically) on a certain field. Although one of the critics of this ranking is that it somewhat ignore the teaching and focus on the research, yet, it is fairly far from the bias that may occur in the other rankings. It is produced by a public university and there is no commercial activity involved.
another point, many major "breakthrough" discoveries in modern science were done by people affiliated with cambridge; isaac newton, charles darwin, maxwell, and many more. Officially, the university of cambridge holds the world's record of Nobel laureates. I just want to address very important point, this forum is about MBAs which is a professional taught degree and then students should not get confused between the strength of a university and its MBA, for example John Hopkins as a university is far better than say Emory or Georgetown yet its MBA is even not considered to ranked! similar logic applied for engineering at Harvard compared to say Purdue or UIUC.

Another Canon Vs Nikon fight.

Unfortunately, we are not so extraordinary great photographer to say one is better than other!! .... don't forget the photographer, while evaluating a tool.

I agree 100%. My intention, although it probably didn't seem like that, was to express that it doesn't make sense to say Canon is better than Nikon, just because CNET said so.

I also agree, but lets face it, lots of applicants need such debate to get clearer on which to choose. anyhow, interestingly, I found in the Judge website the following article that compare Cambridge with Oxford!! here it is:
