Welcome to the Part Time vs. Full Time Compendium.

Hjort's Encouraging Signs of Part Time MBA Programs

1. The same professors teach in both the full time and part time program

2. FT students are permitted to enroll in PT courses for normal credit without any need for a petitioning process for recognition of credit. PT students are permitted to enroll in the FT courses.

3. PT students can freely transfer into the FT program without needing to re-apply as a Full Time student. It is a good sign if the school is neutral on the issue of transfer or encourages students to transfer if it is in the interest of the student

Matters get rather more complicated when one includes Executive MBA programs. As discussed previously, Exec MBA programs and PT programs have considerable overlap- so much overlap that it is sometimes difficult to discern much of any meaningful difference between the two types of programs.

One possible reason that some schools use the term "executive" is that just about anything sounds better with the word executive in front of it since this suggests some type of elevated status. On the other hand, "part time" is viewed by some to mean "less serious" or to dilute the academic experience (in contrast with business schools, none of the ultraelite US law schools have a PT law program).


If we include any sort of primarily non residential MBA program, the number of "non full-time" MBA programs (i.e. schools with PT and/or Executive MBA programs) increases significantly:

What are some advantages of a PT program?

1) You experience less career disruption during your studies

2) You continue to earn money during your studies

3) Some students might find their learning enhanced since they can apply what they learn immediately

4) You can often enter the program at various times of the year rather than just in the Autumn

What are some disadvantages of a PT program?

1) There is less opportunity for an internship

2) There is often less opportunity to benefit from career services

3) PT programs often last longer than FT programs

4) PT students often feel alienated from the FT students and have less oppty to take part in social events, clubs, etc.

5) The PT program might be more intended for "locals" than the FT programs, this might disappoint some students who travel long distances expecting a more cosmopolitan experience

Many students are interested whether they can transfer from the part time program to the full time program. One could call this the acid test of PT MBA programs- if the school refuses to let students transfer from the PT program to the Full Time (or strongly discourages this practice) one I consider this a possible reason to be concerned about the quality of the PT program. If the two programs are fully equivalent it is difficult to see why students should not be able to move freely between them (except, of course, for a reasonable administrative process to effect the transfer).

latest part-time mba school rankings [#permalink] New post   03 Apr 2006, 17:31
Fortunately I am decided about taking a part-time as opposed to full-time or an executive MBA. So how do I go about finding the latest rankings of schools in my area. Is there a website, a magazine or something which publishes these. As matters stand, considering my current home/work location, I feel I have only one choice Haas business school of UC Berkeley. But I'm thinking, am I missing a better ranked school in the vicinity? Also, when I apply I want to do so to atleast 2-3 schools so I do not end up having nothing. Please advise.

In Northern CA there are not too many options among nationally recognized programs beyond UCB and UC Davis. With a short plane ride you have access to UCLA and USC.

Can you please comment on the following topic?

I am looking for suggestions on 2 year part time MBA schools within US.

Please suggest me some schools ( Broad, Michigan is the only school I am aware of at this time )

For financial reasons, I can't to leave my current job.

I am looking for a reasonably good schools , under Top 20, with good programs in Finance, Investment Banking, Portfolio Management.

Need a school that also has good career management center.

I want to have a fixed 2 or 3 year term MBA program with cohorts sessions, because I think cohorts program is more interactive and lot more valuable.
