application vs. resume -- where to put info?

Is your resume supposed to be a reflection of your overall application, or an addendum? To be more specific:

1. Is your resume a highlight sheet of everything you have in your application? Meaning it has the same activities and jobs you mentioned in your application so that it can be a one-sheet summary of your application.

OR

2. Is your resume an additional resource in which you list other activities that you could not fit into your application? Instead of re-listing projects and activities already listed in your application, you use it as a supplementary resource and someone would have to see your entire application to get the full picture.

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Definitely the former. It should be the same document you would use in the market to find a job, albeit with an education focus as well.

Agree to that comment!
If you have a totally different set of activities listed in your resume versus your essays, then you will begin to lose credibility.

Most essays will require you to write your best professional/personal stories, where you made an impact. A resume is a snapshot of all the activities where you made impact -in your professional as well as personal life. So, you can see the overlap between these two things.

Essentially what the essays do is give the story behind the bullet point in the resume. The resume pointers address "what you did", but the essays also tell "how you did it" in addition to the "what".

I'd say, the resume can actually even hold more information that the essay or motivational letter or whatever you might call it... while the resume a.k.a. CV holds facts about all the activities you've done so far, the essay part highlights and explains further only those facts that are especially relevant to the MBA application. But maybe that's a cultural thing, too... I can only suggest to get more info on that topic by experts, e.g. there are expert lectures on Masters applications on a fair in leeds or at the MBA Tour there are also always panel discussions about applications.
