I see your point but I am not so sure that Yale's yield is low. First, Yale is an elite cluster school- we should expect it to be outclassed by the ultra elites when it comes to yield. Thus, the fact that Columbia or Harvard of Northwestern might have a higher yield is not very surprising. Second, in some recent years Yale has enjoyed a higher yield than many of its fellow elite cluster schools including UCB, UVA, UCLA, Dartmouth, Michigan, Cornell, NYU, and Duke. Indeed, in one year Yale had the highest yield of the entire elite cluster. It is probably true that Yale is often regarded as a second choice school but this is a hazard faced by virtually all the elite cluster schools.
