Re: A group of sudents who have begun to clean up Frederick Law [#permalink]
OA : A

The subject is group which is singular so the main verb has to be believes,
infinitive to be redesigned followed by infinitive to be

Answer must be (E).

a group of N-plural who....V-plural

Choice was between D and E.
MATT, why is E better than D :?: . To me, "to be" seems more appropriate.

.....the park needs not to be redesigned but to be returned to its former condition.

Buzz, you are absolutely right. I missed that last "to be" connection. Changing my answer to (D).

The subjunctive mood is also being tested here, right?

Come on MATT, I never told that rule. :angry :angry
This is a straight A.

A group of students its not of type "one of plural". That rule is for usage of "ONE" not the group.
Group of students is always singular.

If you want a recap of that read the notes of Gayathri. :btw she is in INSEAD.

Why is "believes" correct here? The stem says "HAVE begun" not "HAS begun.

NVM, i Just got it :-D

A group of students who HAVE begun..
A group of students HAS begun.

The who, changes the subject here, and since group is singular, believes is correct.

So I will stop talking to myself

This is a really good problem. "have" is used in a phrase that modifies the "students" and "believes" is used because "a group" as a subject is singular.

This is the subject-verb agreement usage to the second power. Lol
