I did the GMAT today, just to see what the CAT was like. I got the same score (780, Q51, V48), but I left a verbal question unanswered to see what penalty there would be.

It's amazing how similar it is the GMATPrep. Be sure to do these exams as many times as you can. Verbal was similar to the OG11 (last part), with no unreasonable SCs. RC was tough and the CR seemed straight out of the newspaper business section- a good reason to read an English language newspaper every day!

The Quant was almost identical to what you would get in GMATPrep, although I am convinced that the second question was either experimental or badly worded. I spent 10 minutes trying to make heads or tales of it, before I remember that advice I give my students- no one question will have much impact on your score!

No permutations/combinations/probability!
Lots of inequalities/remainders.

The essays were interesting- my only frustration is that I'm a poor typist, so I had to plan as I was writing- not recommended. I did very well on the argument essay, but I did not give many examples in the issue essay, so I'd be surprised if I get more than a 5 in AWA. Practise typing if you are like me!

I finished quantitiative with about ten minutes to spare, and verbal with about 5 minutes to spare. Then there was this survey about where I wanted to do my MBA, and I envied all of the people in GMAT forum who will be heading to business school- I dropped out of university and have never thought of finishing my degree.

I won't be going anywhere, as this wonderful forum helps me to be a better GMAT instructor!

How's that for standardization :shock: Wow Kevin, you have really got the test dialed. Just curious, was that second problem anything like the ones you post in the math forum ? :wink:

Assuming that you correctly answered all the other verbal questions, I wonder if you were double/triple penalized for leaving #41 blank?

Congrats for that score...!
readin your post made me feel as if GMAT is child's play...
and 780 after 16 years... oh my goodness! and that too AGAIN!! bigger shock

Please tell us why did u want to take this stupid test again?
Was is just that u wanted to take it for fun or what? I am pretty sure you must have noticed big changes right! but still u did it dude! AGAIN

I've been waiting to hear your result. At least that's one score in the top 3-400 that we don't have to worry about competing with in the eyes of Adcoms.

I find it amazing that you could spend 10 minutes on a single question, and still have 10 minutes to spare in the Q section. Just shows that you really know your stuff and just killed it.

How did the V section feel to you? You said that you left one blank - do you think that accounted for the entire deduction in the section or did you possibly have a few more misses? That would be a huge deduction if a single question accounted for the drop from 51V to 48V and 800 to 780 overall. I guess we are still wondering, 51/49, 51/50, 51/51, what to they mean?

Certainly your qualifications as a great teacher were evident long before the test, but it should also re-assure your students that you can put theory into practice.

Kevin,

I'm really disappointed man - I mean, you took 16 years and still couldn't improve your score! seriously - what I recommend for you is you start with basic high school geometry and 7th grade grammar..then, what I think you should do is............wait....did you say 780?! 7-8-0?!

I definitely think that my verbal performance was better than it was in 1990. I now speak Spanish, and being bilingual helps with SC and RC.

I was wondering where the other 20 points were, but I forgot, he actually skipped a question!! So technically, he scored better than last time.

Remember that this is a full time job for me- I just wanted to point out that (i) you shouldn't get upset over any one question early in the exam, (ii) work hard on inequalities and (iii) do a typing course if you hunt and peck like me.

People who pull off great scores while working full-time or raising families (or both!) are the ones to be admired.

hey kevin,

what was the nature of the inequality questions? Was it a straightforward problem solving Q asking for a value/range, or was it testing number properties etc. ?

I wanted to ask you whether other ppl in the past have got more than 51 in Q?

I received Q53 in 2003 end when Prometric were conducting tests.

Though I did notice that the Q questions have become more tricky than few yrs ago.
