A) looks fine.
I believe "discovered that" is a proper construction.
Choice D is most concise but akward.

its A..if 'that' is not in the underlined part...then it should be C...

The official answer is: D
Parallel construction error in the original statement. A similar form is required on each side of the comparison. тАЬDiligence - brightnessтАЭ

there seems to be a problem here.

A relative pronoun is needed in the rest of the choices. I removed
"that" from the underlined sentence. IMO, D is the best
