Calling UCLA Fall 2008 Applicants

WTF - UCLA sends me my admit email today. How am I supposed to attend A-days(tomorrow, Sunday and Monday)?

CONGRATULATIONS NC...knew you would make it! Any $$ involved?
Now then...Ross or UCLA? I know things would've changed with the latest deveopments...

NC, that was definitely one of the most "unconventional" responses I've seen from someone who got into a top 15 school.

but CONGRATS! Just try to make the Sunday A-Days (today), the rest is not that useful.

lol, didn't mean to sound ungrateful about my admit. I just came home from AA after having a fantastic time at GBR. Frankly, the UCLA email just kind of distracted me from the festivities by giving me something to think about.

Ahem...That's an easy question. I am going to ...Ross...I mean Anderson...I mean Michigan...I mean CA. Clear as mud?

Nice...couple that with the CA residency and it becomes a sizeable amount...i'd think.

that is true, since Ross charges $43K for out of state and UCLA charges $30K. That's a pretty big difference unless you get $23K/year from Ross.

I hate to say it prasad, since I'd rather see you at Ross with us, but I don't think I could give up the money and location advantages of UCLA if I were you. It isn't like you are choosing between Ross and say UCSB (or some cali school with a little known MBA program).

But, what about rent and cost of living in the LA area. For a 2 bed apartment, I suspect it will be in the range of $1700+ whereas in AA, it will be half that rent. Over a period of 2 years, AA's cost of living pretty much evens out the tuition advantage. Is there anyone with a different opinion?

1700 seems a little steep..will depend on where exactly you stay.
Strangely...even I was doing these calculations for my choice with Duke...
Duke had higher fees but the cost of living was definitely cheaper.

Even after that..based on the estimated student budgets, UCLA turned out a tad cheaper over the two year period.
I my case though...I don't have the $$ or the residency...

Also keep in mind the following....

Your wife might err... will find it easier to find a good job here in LA. Can't really say that about AA.
You would have established Michigan residency by the second year right? So you qualify for one year of in-state fees...there too

Just thoughts..thowing them out there for you to consider..

You're not going to find a liveable 2BR Apartment in Westwood/Brentwood for under $2000. Decent 2BRs will go between $2300-2600. You won't find 2BR apartments near UCLA for $1800. You would have to go out to Culver City, El Segundo, etc. if you want that. $1700-1800 is the going rate for a good 1BR.

I have to agree with terp. Having lived in West LA for the last three years, rent is going to be $2K + for a two bedroom apartment almost anywhere on the westside. If anyone has questions about areas, though, please let me know.

I would say itll be about 2k for rent in LA (my friend pays 1900 for a 2BR in Culver City area, although I believe his address technically says "westwood") and about 1k (ave) in AA. I doubt food prices will be enormously different. Utilities (power) probably will be, so lets say 1200 difference a month. That's a cost of living difference of 24k over 20 months, which is only half of your UCLA tuition advantage. You'd have to pay 2400 more per month in LA for the UCLA tuition difference to become break even with your overall AA cost.

Also, you may end up doing your internship in LA whether you live in LA or AA (much more likely than being in AA, that's for sure). In that case you'd end up paying for 2 apartments for a while.
