Re: My GMAT Journey: from 490 to 700 ! (Q49, V36) [#permalink]
Congrats! GREAT JOB!!!
I'm non native speaker and I am having issues with Reading Comprehension section, especially dealing with INFERENCE questions. I have read the main "tips" from this board and several classes I attended (Veritas, etx) but I am still struggling.
I was wondering what are your winning strategies to help me master this particular area.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations Mishari!

If you are applying to Insead and Columbia, we might be in the same class in 09 ;)... that is, if I can increase my gmat...

Did my first test today (also non-native english speaker) and scored a miserable 620 (Q:40, V: 35). I'm thinking of taking it again in 6 weeks. Do you think this will give me enough time to score above 650? I was really disappointed about the verbal, as I was consistently scoring about 40-45 on the gmatprep and other cat exams (kaplan and 800score). I'm not as confident that I can improve the quant part since math is not really my forte.... But can I impove my overall score in such a short time frame, and if so, HOW???

Thanks for you input!! And hopefully meet you next year - either at Insead or Columbia :).

In order to get to the 700+ level, I believe you either need to score REALLY high on verbal while keeping your math at 40 or otherwise you'll have to improve your math. Just work on math to reach 44-46 and then get your verbal up a little by more intense practice and you should be fine.

I improved my verbal as following:
- SC: manhattan SC book + spidey notes for SC by testmagic
- RC: practice .. practice .. practice .. I solved all reading pessages in OG11 and OG11 verbal review .. you'll start noticing your weaknesses in reading and answering inference questions as you practice.
- CR: well, I guess as long as you learn the different types here (weakening, strengthening, assumptions .. etc) and practice via OG11, you should be fine.

Thanks All again,

For the RC, I think there are more than one way to tackle this part. I tried several and ended up reading the whole pessage carefully in no longer than 3 minutes, and then try my best to answer the questions.

The rule of thumb is that you do not have to dig through the deep details or try to memorize them. You only need them for inference questions, at which point you can refer back to the pessage. The answer to these questions is clearly stated in the pessage.

Hello,

Congratulations on your awesome score!!

I am re-taking the exam on Aug 30, which gives me 19 full days until THE big day.

I'm going to be studying like crazy until then, I already know most of the material but will be focusing on my areas of weakness.

Approx, how many hours did you study each day prior to your exam?

(I'm trying to decide if I should give myself another week or two...)

Thanks

I am not familiar with the OG 11 prep guide where do you obtain that guide at. Thanks and your story is inspiring.

You can get it about anywhere. I've seen them at Barnes & Noble, Amazon.com (probably the cheapest if you have time to wait on the mail).
