Me stuck between B and D. The slant is more towards D :)

(A) might error,

because we should use "had" rather than "has".

I think it might be (D)

what's the OA

I think its E. Keeps the verb tenses intact...'discovered', 'had' and 'knew'.

I'm stuck between D and E. they both seem correct but I would go with E because I think there should be a comma after "In young manhood" for answer D

I vote for D as well. I beleive we have a question of sequence of tenses
here.

Firstly, the peddler knew something.
Secondly, Lincoln discovered something the peddler already knew.

So, Lincoln discovered something the peddler had known before him.

We use Simple Past first, and then we use Past Perfect.[/b]

Re: (Arco) mySC [#permalink]
D for me after a long deliberation between C and D.
C has an awkward construction: it sounds as if "the young manhood" came before the "Yankee peddler". Incorrect comparison it is.
A) uses improper tense
E) introduces an adjective clause and sounds as if it were Lincoln who was "discovered"

sorry guys, for the late reply. These days the number of posts per day has increased so much that I lose track of what I posted :)

Here's the explanation from Arco's.
