I also selected A. But after seeing the OA, B makes more sense because the parallelism is between "put money into....." and "than into home improvement".....and looks awakward.

Parallelism should be between "homeowners put money into .... than they do into .....".

(A) than into
(B) than they do into
(C) than they are into
(D) as into
(E) as

please provide your answers with explanations.

The answer has to be B. There is a tough call between A & B. First eliminate D & E on the basis of idiom " More likely X than Y". Now just try to make X & Y parallel. Structure of X is 'to+verb+into'. Same should be the structure of Y.

You put something. Parallel: You do something. It is different with "You are something". Put is the action of doing something & not being someone.

Re: When the real estate market is uncertain homeowners are more [#permalink]
i choose A too.

but i think because the verb "to put" is inside the idiom so we've to use a verb after "than"

A should have been correct if it were something like this

When the real estate market is uncertain homeowners are to put money more likely into stocks or certificates of deposit than into home improvements.

Re: When the real estate market is uncertain homeowners are more [#permalink]
This is the perfect example of verb comparison. The action "put money" should be compared with another action. so B
