Hi Linda,
I had taken my 1st GMAT last year and scored 640. I took it gain this year last week and scored 710(q50,v37) . I have a software /male/indian profile with 3.5 yrs of experience. i am lppking for Finance. and targeting Stern.what chance do i stand.
since i have a soiftware background what extra can i do to strenghten my application to Stern. which other b-schools should i apply to.

Congratulations on the GMAT!

You certainly have a competitive profile for Stern, but so do a lot of others like you. You need to 1) distinguish yourself from other Indian IT professionals and 2) demonstrate a strong fit with NYU's program.

Thanx for ur valuable advice.
I would like to add that. I have international working exposure.
have worked with clients like P&ONL, Hutch U.K. would that help?
will taking a reco from a client with whom i am working help me in my
application.
Currently i am leading a team of 10 associates in Hutch project U.K.
I am an actively involved with 2 NGOs(a blind and deaf and dumb school) for last 3-4 yrs. and helped them get a government aid also.

currently working as a joint secretary of this organization.

But dont have a finance exposure. would that be a negative when i apply for stern.

Looking fwd to ur valuable advice

Abhishek,

Certainly your international work, on-the-job leadership experience, and NFP role will help you distinguish yourself from many other Indians applying with a superficially similar profile.

You have actually hit on a critical point in admissions advising. Details and specifcs make the difference. Obviously you can't include all details. The essays are not supposed to be a brain dump. But you certainly should choose the most impressive, important, and illlustrative details to reveal the qualities that business schools value: leadership, teamwork, commitment to one's community, a contributive nature, etc.

i have shortlisted few schools
University of maryland
univesrity of southern california.
UCLA Anderson
NYU Stern

I have few more in mind... as i am not sure wether i would go for finance or IT managment. I have a strong liking for Finance. but with my non-financial background i think it would be difficult to get into a Good b-school like stern with scholarship. and probably i would be wasting around 4 valuable year of my experience in IT industry.

Hi,

You have already selected some great schools. I would suggest two of the best schools in finance: Carnegie Mellon and Rochester.
