This thread is really dead. I take it that most people are not applying to UCLA until Round 2? I know I am not.

They just posted the Class of 2010 profile:

https://www.anderson.ucla.edu/Documents/ ... ss2010.pdf

Mean GPA: 3.5, Mean GMAT: 711,

Mid-80% GPA Range: 3.2-3.8, Mid-80% GMAT Range: 660-760

Look at the selectivity..... a staggering 9.7%.... Tougher than HBS!!!! Tougher than Wharton....... Nearly Stanford-like...... And we thought that UCLA was a bit easier..... lol

Just so you know, they admit way more than 360 students.

Yes, their yield is only around 50%. Their admit rate should be in the 18-20% range, which is not bad for last year.

Re: Calling UCLA Fall 2009 Applicants [#permalink]
So I just got off the phone with the admissions office, which I think are a bunch of a$$ holes, and it seems they are very strict on word limits for essays. Now I'm screwed because there is almost no way I can reduce my optional essay to 250 words, I'm at 340 right now. It's just not possible. Help?

Kry, any advice on word limits for UCLA applications?

if you call the adcoms, they'll always be strict about the word limits or say "use you judgment". 340 for a 250 word essay is WAY too much. If you're like at 260 or 270, you *might* be ok, but 340 will not be acceptable and will hurt your chances.

Haas has FOUR essays at 250 words each, and we were all able to get our point across. HBS has like 6 300 word essays, and people have to do it. I recommend you purchase (or borrow) the "65 Successful HBS essays" and see how they were able to fit all the info in 300 words or fewer. :)

Good luck!

Well, it's the optional essay and I have to essentially explain two failing grades in two seperate semesters. I used 132 words for the first grade and then 157 for the second and 38 to wrap it up = 327 total. The problem is that I have actual reasons around my grades that I need to explain.

I'm in for R1. This is my only realistic school, I would be disappointed and surprised if I don't get in. Every other school is a reach.

did you fail each class for completely different reasons? If the reasons are at all similar, I would try to explain both together.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think you need to explain in such detail. Unless an immediate member of your family died or got cancer at that time, the reasons are all the same, you sucked (it's the same reason for my failed grades). You just need to acknowledge it and express clearly in the rest of your app that you are not that failure anymore.

Well there wouldn't be much of a point in writing the essay at all if I were just going to say I sucked. I'm not making excuses in my essay, just puting in some context around the circumstances, which makes me feel better.

I'm not arguing for one way or another on whether to submit an optional essay discussing your grades, but here's something else to keep in mind: Do you want to end your application on a bad note?
