Keep trying fellas. The OA & OE baffled me and looks like they will baffle most of you too.

Re: While closed to the public during the entire decade of the [#permalink]
I'd like to try to take a stab at this....I chose E.

While closed to the public during the entire decade of the 1990s, the Italian government undertook extensive renovations to stabilize the Leaning Tower of Pisa while preserving some of its famous tilt.

A) While closed to the public during the entire decade of the 1990s

Eliminate: extraneous information "While closed during the 1990s" could have summarized this better.

B) During the entire decade of the 1990s, while closed to the public

Eliminate: extraneous information "While closed during the 1990s" could have summarized this better as well.

C) Beginning in the 1990s after closing it to the public
Eliminate: extraneous information "After closing it to the public in the 1990s" might be a better choice.

D) Closing the landmark to the public beginning in the 1990s
Eliminate: extraneous information "After closing it to the public in the 1990s" might be a better choice.

E) In the 1990s, during which the landmark was closed to the public
My choice: The temporal relationship between the two statements match. When it was closed...they did this.

What's the right choice? :?

Re: While closed to the public during the entire decade of the [#permalink]
How can it be E? Can you offer some more justification? Isn't E unclear about when the landmark was actually closed to the public.

IMO, In 1990's != entire decade.

Are you saying that the original sentence never need the entire decade to start with? Is that what you mean by a temporal relationship?? cruel huh? I considered that E changed the meaning.

E is the correct choice and here is the OE

The opening clause of this choice ("in the 1990s") correctly modifies "the Italian government" while maintaining the meaning of the original sentence: that the Tower's closure and the renovations began and ended in the 1990s.

Yes, I can try. Hopefully, I don't butcher my explanation!

1) The original statement is "when closed during the entire decade of the 1990s"
2) Why don't we just shorten the ""entire decade of the 1990s" to just plain "the 1990s"? This period of time is the "super-set" of that time period. That's what I meant by temporal. Did I make any sense? I often don't.
3) Yes, the phrase "entire decade" is extraneous.

A) While closed to the public during the entire decade of the 1990s – Modifier Issue (Incorrectly modifies Govt.)
B) During the entire decade of the 1990s, while closed to the public - (Incorrectly modifies Govt.)
C) Beginning in the 1990s after closing it to the public – It can point to public/Govt.
D) Closing the landmark to the public beginning in the 1990s -
E) In the 1990s, during which the landmark was closed to the public – Passive

D

Ultimately, I went with D.

The reason why I eliminated E is because the "which"

Isn't it supposed to be "WHEN", especially when you're referring to the 1990's?

E) In the 1990s, during which the landmark was closed to the public.

I think both C and D are wrong . Reason: Begining in the 1990's implies that the leaning tower is still closed to the public and renovation is still going on.
Now, B and E remain . B should be the answer .The usage of during is proper in B than in E . During should refer to a time period and something that describes the time period ,so, the entire decade of the 1990's should suffice

The problem with this Q is it expects you to put your CR hat on and examine whether the original sentence itself is meaningful. I liked E, but I said why do I care when it changes the original meaning. Who knows? The Italian govt might have closed it during the entire decade. that idea might be illogical and closed only during renovation is logical. But thats not what we deal with in SC. Oh well! I should not say we do NOT deal with it at all. But we don't deal with it in this fashion so cruelly :(

The OE is definitely not very helpful.

A and B literally mean that the Italian govt. was closed to public

C,D are awkward ... I am not sure but can we use 2 gerunds in this way ?? If C/D did not have beginning then they could have been right.

BTW in D --> to the public beginning in 1990s ?? When does public begin ??

E maintains the correct/intended meaning

1990s spans the entire decade ...

E. I agree with OA and OE. During correctly modifies "1990s, which is a period from 1990-1999.
"Closing the landmark to the public beginning in the 1990s" in D is somewhat awakward.

Rest self explanatory.

What is beginning ? closing or public ????

E) In the 1990s, during which the landmark was closed to the public –

i picked E
