Re: Calling UCLA Fall 2009 Applicants [#permalink]
somehow my topic notification didn't work for this thread, but

CONGRATS to all who got in, and I'm sorry to hear about the WL! :(

Looks like we may have good representation at UCLA this year from GClub (last year most of us ended up elsewhere)!

rjacobs, I think UCLA W/L you because they thought you were too exceptional and probably will get into Stanford anyway, so they don't want to go through the "heartache". :P (I'm only half joking about that one, I've heard UCLA dinging lots of HBS/Stanford admits in the past for yield control).

How would UCLA know that applicants have already gotten into/or are going to be admitted to HBS/Stanford?

I wasn't dinged, or waitlisted, or admitted, so I'm still in for R2. I originally submitted 10/9 but a crappy recommender submitted late and I wasn't sure if they moved me to R2 or not, looks like they did.

Oh, and my GMAT is sub-700, so we shall see.

Looks like you and I are in the same boat. I'm applying to UCLA, UNC, AND Duke with a sub-700 (690). But I come from the entertainment industry, so I hope that will help my chances in a year when the applicant pool will likely be heavily drawn from finance.

dunno, but some candidates are "too good to be true", so to speak. You know, if an Olympic medalist applies to UCLA, they probably also applied to H/S/W, and UCLA may sense that the caliber of the student is possibly going to get him/her into H/S/W, so they may waitlist and see.

Of course, this is ALL my own speculation, so don't put too much weight into it. :)

Hey I'm pretty much banking on the fact that I'm not in finance/engineering/consulting and come from a small town in Ohio to put me in a different bucket than everyone else. I think where I'm from and what I do is the main differentiating factor for my profile. For your sake and mine, I hope our schools are looking for a different type of applicant, not the typical profiles

Thanks for the support Kry, although I think UCLA is just more competitive than people give it credit for, and my interview was honestly not the best. I'm a little confused myself though at the large pool of us that were waitlisted - I think UCLA is shooting themselves in the foot by doing that as it will cause all of us to wait and look harder at our R2 schools. And, even if I get dings all around in the end, I wouldn't complain about UCSD with a full fee waiver, so I'm not stressing out too much about it. Plus, I'm pretty stoked about my Haas app :) ...so we'll see.

I blame it on the new admissions director. Coming from Wharton I think she is used to making liberal use of the waitlist. I think UCLA is trying to protect their yield, and compare us to R2 applicants. For instance...rjacobs...if you get into Stanford, you wont be considering UCLA anymore...

Just got an admit from Michigan...so relieved I'll be going somewhere next year :) .

Thats pretty much what she said in the info session I attended. Waitlist even good candidates in round 1 and compare them with round 2 appicants. My guess is lot of waitlisted people from round 1 will get in.

Not the exact words but I'm paraphrasing what she said.
