Unfortunately, I won't be able to make it. Pretty disappointed because it looks like it is going to be really cool...

Kryzak,

Would you recommend waiving out of any of the core courses? Or do you think it's better to stay with your cohort through the core to get to know classmates better?

Personally, I have an engineering background so the only courses that I could waive are "Data & Decisions" and "Financial Accounting". It's been 6 years since I've taken a course so I'd have to study up in order to even pass the waiver exam. I don't think that's how I want to spend my summer though.

For everyone's reference, I've bolded the courses that offer waiver exams.

Fall-A
Leadership Speech (MBA200C) - 1 unit (Cannot waive)
Data and Decisions (MBA200S) - 2 units
Microeconomics (MBA201A) - 2 units

Organizational Behavior (MBA205) - 2 units (Cannot waive)

Fall-B
Financial Accounting (MBA202) - 2 units
Finance (MBA203) - 2 units
Marketing (MBA206) - 2 units

Spring-A
Macroeconomics (MBA201B) - 2 units
Operations Management (MBA204) - 2 units (Cannot waive)

Spring-B
Strategy (MBA299) - 2 units (Cannot waive)
Ethics (MBA207) - 1 unit (Cannot waive)
Leadership (MBA205L) - 1 unit (Cannot waive)

Good question SolarMBA,

I would say most people said to waive out of a class if you can. If it takes a lot of work over the summer to prepare, then I personally would say that it may not be worth waiving. You'll get 7 classes with your cohort, along with many big events and cohort competition, so waiving out of one (or two) classes will not be detrimental. Unfortunately, I'm not sure what electives are available to take this fall (most of them filled up when we were bidding), so you may not have that many choices to make up those 2 units. Of course, speaker series (1 unit each) could be used to fill up the slots.

Finally, the core curriculum MIGHT change this fall (faculty are voting on it), so the Fall AB/Spring AB schedule you listed may shift.

So yeah, in summary:
- Waive if you don't have to prepare too much (i.e. more than 1 week of moderate studying) for it
- Don't worry about "missing out" if you waive out of one class
- If you can waive out of stats, do it! :)
- Spend your summer relaxing! Don't study too much or worry about what you need to "prepare" for school. The answer is, you don't need to prepare anything. There'll be LOTS of studying once school starts, trust me. :P

Thanks Kryzak!

For those of us who won't be able to make it to math camp, do you know of any online refresher courses we should take?

Can't wait for this fall!

Yeah, you should be getting a list of online and offline resources this summer so you can review. I also have a set of CDs that go over basic accounting, finance, quant, and stats that I can lend out. :)

Kryzak,

Do you know the proposed core curriculum that faculty is voting on? Is faculty voting on different core or voting to reduce number of core and increase electives?

I'm starting to look for housing in Berkeley but am not very familiar with the area. I've heard most Haas students live in the North Berkeley area around the Gourmet Ghetto, or in the Elmwood & Rockridge neighborhoods.

For those of you who are more familiar with Berkeley, which areas or streets should one avoid? For example, in North Berkeley the rents seem to get cheaper the further west you go. There seems to be quite a few places available around MLK & Cedar/Vine/Rose. Is this area okay? It's only about 4 short blocks from the gourmet ghetto. Also, are there specific streets in Rockridge where people don't get places (south of X street)?

Thanks!

Northside is good, and you can go as far west as Sacramento without big problems.

I would NOT live too far west of MLK in the area south of University though. Some people do live there, but it's not the safest area.
