Re: The treaty specifies that the economy of the member nations [#permalink]
'D' & 'E' - can be eliminated becos of the usage 'inflation rates of three percent or less' and moreover the 'resist' in 'E' makes it sound like the economy can resist external tariffs but the economy can only be made reistant to external tariffs.

yes this is subjuntive mood : rather easy to detect thanks to the verb "specify"

In E "have three percent or less of an inflation rate" is awful, "have an inflation rate of less than three percent" is by far better

I will go with B.(economy singular with each)

Comments?

I am sorry I might be sounding STUPID#1 but ya I am really confused or I missing something BIG :o  :? . May be because I am too tired and feeling sleepy.

Anyway the question is I don't find any correct choice.
I am confused with OA

(B) economy ( SINGULAR) of each member nation have(PLURAL) an inflation rate of less than three percent and be resistant to.

Shouldn't HAVE ne HAS.

I mean please help me

Saurabh,
Great Catch! If you caught that in your sleep, you must be really good. I agree that have is modifying economy, which is incorrect.

Iam now leaning towards D

Qhoc,
Can you confirm OA?

HI Sunder Thanks for Standing by my Side. Well to tell you honestly I don't like ANY of the ABOVE choice. I am more intrested in knowing the source of the question before digging in any concept.

I still have a feeling that I am missing something. I don't know what.

If I were forced to pick an ANS I wud have pciked E. I know the "%" part is AWFUL but the best sentence out of the lot.

I am just lost.

Thanks

Saurabh,
On second thoughts, Iam lost on the usage of have. For ex:

1. I have to go to a wedding
2. You have to come!
3. It is imperative for this nation's economy to have a growth rate of 15%

I made these up, let me know if you see any grammatical errors

In all the above sentences we are using have with a singular subject.

Its late and I have had enough!! ;-)

Later,
Sunder

Can somebody explain the usage of "have" with singular subjects?

Re: The treaty specifies that the economy of the member nations [#permalink]
hey! Sunder give me sometime I will be going over the topic tonight prob and will try to get some answer. I think The USE OF HAVE is correct here and I skipped it. Well my guess for now is "subjunctive mood" though I am yet to come up with a concrete answer.

Thanks
Saurabh Malpani
