Just wait until you get those darn emails with the subject "Yale SOM Admissions" (or any other school for that matter) and it's a newsletter, or an invitation to some event and not an interview request.

haha, yea those were the worst. they really need to stop doing that.

good luck to everyone.

Question to the current students/alums. How did you like living in new haven? I pictured a nice small town, but recently someone told me that other than the Yale campus it's not a nice place, but this person hadn't lived there.

although new haven isn't a huge city, it definitely has an urban feel, and not a 'quaint small town' feel. the business school campus is a few blocks away from the undergrad campus (10 min walk). the areas immediately surrounding SOM are mostly residential and nice to walk around in.

downtown is nice and has various shops, but there has been a recent string of robberies and crime in the area. yale university police is working with new haven police to address the issue; even so, it's always best to take precautions like walking in groups and taking the shuttle late night. after 6 pm, there is a free shuttle that takes you to/from anywhere in new haven; all you have to do is call the phone # and it picks you up wherever you are.

if you're looking for a non-urban feel, though, yale isnt the right place. someplace more rural/secluded like Tuck might be a better fit.

edit to add - i came from an urban setting (NYC area), so i've walked around pretty much all of new haven at all times of the night, and i haven't felt unsafe yet. single females walking around after dark might have a different opinion though.

i am not from new haven but i have been living near there (woodbridge 20 mins away) for like 9 years and my parents work at yale. It is pretty busy place. There are lots of chinese people there and quite a few theaters you can check out as well as bars - basically a lot of places you can get to via the bus or just by walking a short distance really. There's the crime problem but you should always be smart about how you travel in pretty much anywhere really. Try the dimsum place in new haven - it is very good - i go there everytime i visit my parents :)

Thanks for the replies. This is reassuring as I'm definitely looking for a more urban feel than a rural setting. In fact, it was going to the Tuck info session that got me wondering what New Haven was like... the description of the setting at Tuck is probably the only thing holding me back from applying there. I had no idea how secluded Hanover is, and I started wondering if New Haven was anything like it.

Dartmouth and Yale are polar opposites when it comes to setting. Dartmouth is well landscaped and has lots of grassy areas, but from the several times I've been there, I've gotten the impression that Hanover, NH is pretty much a college town that only consists of Dartmouth College. In fact, it's probably a good 2 hour drive from Hanover to a city of any size. Yale doesn't have many green spaces, but it has great architecture, feels like a big city in some areas, yet you can find secluded places on campus if you need to get away from it.

I had a question regarding reapplications. I was wait-listed last year up until the July timeframe. It says on top of my application this year that my interview is "complete". Does that mean I no longer need to be interviewed again this year?

The best answer is going to come from Admissions. I would just call them and explain, I'm sure they are familiar with this. Good luck

Only if they need more information. You would still be able to get accepted without one, in your case.

At this point I would say no news is no news

Looking at last year's thread, the first batch of invites came out around Oct. 19th... let's hope they're just as quick this year!

Thanks for the help regarding my reapplicant interview question. On another note I too was tricked by an e-mail from Yale SOM Admissions. Shows how jumpy we all are :P

If I applied R1 and didn't receive that email from adcom (even though it's trivial) that CyberC1 mentioned, is it concerning?

Just so you know mine was in reference to registering for Diversity Weekend. So it may not have gone to all candidates.

Those emails don't go to the people who have created a application login but to the people who sign up to receive newsletters. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
