Calling All NYU Stern Fall 2011 Applicants

Hi everyone, just submitted 5 minutes ago! Strange to see Stern slip from 13 to 18 in the BW rankings. I'm guessing the financial crisis has skewed these latest rankings out of whack.

all...just wondering if essay 1, choices in life that led me to where i am, where do you start it from? right back from why you chose a certain major....or just professional choices from company to company/position?

i started it from a reference point from my deployment, then i connected everything - i tried to focus on a theme, for me my theme was "helping people" it was really basic but i tried to show a pattern of making decisions to help people - join the army - project i did in iraq - consulting / mentoring junior officer -> then tied all that to my short and long term goals as a consultant and then strategic manager

i think its important for the whole essay to flow from a central idea, i think a reference point is a good way to make it more interesting, rather than say:
"I decided to pursue a career as a management consultant"

you could say something like "I had just landed in Japan to lead a team on a very important project to resolve major operational challenges. It was my first time in a lead role and the work I did fueled my passion to develop skills in management, strategy, and operations.."

i dont know something like that maybe, just my 2 cents..

Kudos for that. I had a latent central theme in my essay; I think I'll make it more evident.

so how many of you have noticed Stern's massive fall in the BW Rankings!

Yeah, I just saw the rankings. I deleted my Stern app and started a SMU app instead. Kidding. I think these rankings make about as much sense as the BCS.

question, the form for Stern asks if you are applying for any other graduate schools, did people just leave this section blank?

I think this is right but I want to check with others - is the deadline 11:59PM EST on Monday night?

I had a question with regards to the Stern Application. In the Academic and Professional Information section, Stern asks for the GPA. As an international student, do I need to convert my overall score into GPA or do I leave as is?

What are some different formats people are doing for essay 3? Or is everybody just doing either a written essay or a powerpoint?

interested in hearing what people have decided and how they approached the decision.

One idea I rejected was making a jigsaw puzzle of some sort that they'd have to put together w/ images of my life with 1 piece missing and then have a note (within the puzzle) that said "the missing piece of me is NYU Stern!" or something cheezy like that.

I decided not to do it simply because it would be a pain for both me to put together and for the Stern adcoms to assemble, and lets face it, its pretty cheezy.

I just sent in a cool photo of Yosemite backcountry I took with an accompanying short essay about why I like backpacking. I think they are just trying to get beyond the 'professional' you, and find out about your personality. My 2 cents.

i agree, i tried to make a good presentation that showed the different parts of me

i structured it with a picture of me from iraq with arrows point to my head, heart, and feet...

one foot was on the ground -- i labeled this where i've been
one was in the air to take the next step -- i labeled this where i'm going

then i had four slides after that, the one for my heart i put pictures of me and my wife, who also happens to be my high school sweetheart from when we were kids and now, i put up a picture from 9-11, and a picture of my family

for my head - i put pictures from meetings i did in iraq to set up a local government, to brief my guys, and to build a new water plant in a dangerous town

for where i've been - i had a ranger school quote, pictures of me in combat situations etc

for where i'm going - i put nyc as the background and some other stuff

also i submitted this morning, so here we go...

now on to round 2 applications, ill be happy in april when i know where i'll be!

In for R1

I am applying in RD 1 and making some last minute changes to my application. My transcript is larger than the prescribed size. Does anyone know how to reduce the size of a pdf file?
