According to manhattan SC, use of " A greater than 5 times B" should be either " A is 6 times B" or "A is 5 times B". Use of greater than and Times together is wrong.

Can we get this statement " A greater than 5 times B" in word problems of Quant?
If yes then A = 6B?

i have seen some questions like Value of A is greater than 5 times value of B..but even in ur example case i wont consider it A=6B or A=5B because of Manhattan SC...Logically we can come to know in quant what the question is asking about..

So if the question is " A greater than 5 times B"

what would you do logically.

If i see a question like this in GMAT i wil take it as A>5B simply because i cant conclude that A=6B or A=5B becoz of greater than written, whatever MGMAT SC says ,and after coming from exam will stop asking people on forum to Use Manhattan SC for quant wordings ;) just kidding plz dnt mind....:)

i think We should pm Bunuel for exact clarification ??

I have written wrongly. I apologize.

My question is ' If A is 5 times older than B' then A=6B or A=5B.

i would like to give an example
well now since the question says "5 times older than b" then i will say if B age is 5 then A's Age will be 30
In above "than" makes the difference!!!

if the question asks If A is "5 times as old as B" then it would have been B=5 and A=25
here "as" makes the difference....

Thanx

Absolutely correct !! but my question was do GMAT post such conditions? As on one side it forbids the use in SC , so it is unlikely IMO that GMAT will ask...But I m not sure.

Actually its hard to say from my viewpoint... u must also have read in SC guide that GMAT has commited some errors..The correct thing which they maintained in one of sentences ,the opposite mistake they have done in one para of OG..as far as i remember it was that snakes adjustment to environmental conditions???

I don't see why "than" makes a difference in the way this problem is solved. Why does "than" denote you using 6B, as opposed to 5B?

If B is 10 years old, and A is "5 times older than B", wouldn't A be 5B=50 years old?
How is this any different from A is "5 times as old as B".. Please help. Thank you/

All,

The length of a rectangular garden surrounded by a walkway is twice its width. If difference between the length and width of just the rectangular garden is 10 meters, what will be the width of the walkway if just the garden has width 6 meters?

Note: My translation :"The length of a rectangular garden surrounded by a walkway is twice its width." =>

Let L,W be the length and width of the garden respectively. Let x be the width of the walkway. According to the above statement L = 2x.

" If difference between the length and width of just the rectangular garden is 10 meters"

L - W = 10

also W = 6. => L-6 = 10 => L = 16 => x=8. but the explanation above is still not clear for me.

Please can some one explain how the author translated the above statements in to equation as above?
Thanks,
Vids
