Re: What are your feelings about Tepper? [#permalink]

Hi all,

I noticed there wasn't a "Calling all Tepper Fall 2011" thread here, so I was wondering what is the overall feeling about the school's mba program? I would like to make a career switch to ibanking or sales/trading, so would Tepper be a good school for that?

Thank you!

I would advise you first to make up your mind whether you will be pursuing IB or S&T as they require different skillsets. Second, contact people from the finance club at Tepper and ask them which banks recruited on campus this year and for what positions. You need hard data. You don't want to go to a school only to discover that half the banks that come to campus recruit for risk management or private wealth, but not for IB or S&T. For all I know, for IB, you'll be better served by going to Cornell or Darden.

I'm a current undergraduate at Tepper and spend a lot of time in the building. By rankings, Tepper's graduate specialties are still primarily Supply Chain and Manufacturing related disciplines. For an idea of how many MBAs end up going into each industry, check out this link from their official website (I can't post directly because of membership restrictions): tepper.cmu.edu/corporations-and-recruiters/recruiters/salary-statistics/mba-statistics/2010-mba-graduates-compensation-by-industry/index.aspx

I do think that the students are of a high caliber and are definitely capable of networking and getting into banking, but one of the chief complaints is often that the location (Pittsburgh) is an annoyance when trying to reach and visit NYC-based firms. S&T looks for people who can think on their feet and are very good with numbers, so IMO if you can land a first round interview, if you're that good then the b-school name/prestige/type of degree you have matters less.

I spent a fair bit of time researching Tepper and am a 2011 applicant. I think they have a really nice community of driven but balanced students. I am really considering matriculating there even though I got into a higher ranked school. Their participation in the broader b-school community with other programs and the international focus coupled with the tight knit community really can lead to great things in my opinion. A fine school I would be proud to attend.

Anyone have any insight into Tepper Vs. USC Marshall?

Not in terms of location or price, but in terms of opportunity, post grad salary, network, career growth?

I want to concentrate in Finance/Strategy Consulting and hopefully get into M&A in the future.

Any insight is appreciated.
