Here's another discussion about Linkedin.

linkedin-anyone-38214.html

IMO, definitely something you should have to build a professional network.

It's a good, useful site. I've met quite a few people using it.

I think it's a great tool for professional networking; it can be helpful in so many ways: from finding info about interviewers to creating a virtual billboard for your professional image... anyways, as I am a absolute promoter of social media and such, I would definitely vote yes

Has anyone here had any real measurable benefit from Linked in? (Other than their online job classifieds)

Re: What is your opinion about Linkedin [#permalink]
I got an interview + offer (but did not take) for a job through linkedin
I'm a big fan of linkedin for a special reason (talked about this on my essays) .

Social networks allow me to find a connection/touch point to someone - say i see an opening for a job at XYZ company - i can see linkedin and find ONE person there with something I can touch on (previous work, country, education) and then, that person you can reach out to really understand company culture, work style, opportunities and after a honest discussion of said person's experience, you can gauge if it works for you and suddenly, you are not just another applicant.

So long way to say, i love linkedin, fb, twit, you name it.

LinkedIn is great. I've also met several people from it, including to get info about MBA.

I prefer my own personal website.

To get info about MBAs and jobs I call alumni.

yes. it is pretty useful.

if you are interested in careers in XYZ in an WDS country, just make a search using this criteria and you will see plenty of people and their carrer path to XYZ.

But why would you want to disclose information about yourself?

Clearly, to know the background of others is beneficial; but at the same time, to let others know everything about you and, more importantly, to see who you know is not so good for you, IMO. Do you want to brag about who you know?

What do you think?

A problem I see is keeping these profiles up to date. F**ebook, linkedin, etc.

People may request "friendships" and you don't return their request, hmmm no good.

You may have time now, but what about in two years time?

I think it is all about networking. You may add people you know and you may make your profile private and none of people outside your linkedinfriedns will know about you.

Right, but I still don't get why it's useful for you to let others know your personal contacts (even if you set your profile as private)?

for me it is useful becuase I can find out what I am interested.

I was offered a full time position in a small M&A boutique, but after I talked to my friend who has a former colleague in that firm I realized that things are not so nice as were decribed to me during the interview.
I denied the offer becuase there were limited opportunities. It was very useful for me not to make a wrong career step.

I see your point, Pkit.

Someone mentioned that they use linkedin to contact people from firms they are interested in. Do you contact them directly (i.e., not through your friends)? If so, what do you write to them, and what's the response rate?

Hi I see your point.

Recently I have conctacted a Stern MBA alumni working in the industry of my post-MBA interest. I have got a lot of insight. I dont care if he will see my resume, i do not post my tel number or my adress there.
the difference is that I am not concerned a lot of my personal data scuch as resume.

Re: What is your opinion about Linkedin [#permalink]
I've used it for both 2nd/3rd degree connections or complete strangers, obviously, the latter has a lower response rate - it's really significantly about how you structure your note and make it exploratory/an opportunity for other person to mentor/advice versus get you a job.

I've had a decent success rate at just being frank and honest about exploring options. Response rate varies by what "link" i have - school, common company worked for, same country/city of birth, something to draw upon - lacking all this, an interest (obviously) in the place the work and expressions that succinctly

Ironically my long note here already extols what not to do =) keep it brief and I've had a near 50-70% response rate when I was career hunting a couple of years ago.
Good luck!
