Married People in Business School

Are/were most of your peers married/engaged in serious relationships? I would think that at least 50-75 percent would be, considering the average age for most MBA students is 28-30 years old.

That's high. There's a pretty high number of single people. Depending on the school maybe 20-30% are married. Relationships are a bit harder to judge. Maybe another 10-20% are in "serious relationships". Keep in mind that many people come to bschool and their relationships fall apart. Some others go in the other direction and get engaged/married. It just depends, but I found it to be fairly balanced skewing towards more single if anything.

Married, I would say probably a 25-35% depending on schools (I think its more common for internationals these days). I would say another 15-20% start with serious relationships and about the same finish...some existing couples break up and some new ones form during the two years.

No matter what your situation, you will find people in similar ones. I had friends in just about any relationship/non-relationship scenario you can think of. Married w/ and w/out kids, divorced, married living in different countries, married and both in school (same and different schools), engaged, dating and living together, dating and not living together, single and looking for something serious or chasing undergrads...gay, straight...Its a slice of our demographics. I had friends who had a new relationship every week and some who had 5 kids and a minivan.

Yeah, I'd say 35% is around how many people are married or common law in my school.

However, a lot of them (myself included) are in long distance serious relationships or marriages.

More than a million students enroll in 1000s of B-schools worldwide each year. Statistically, an average of 30% to 40% of incoming students enter with a partner by their side. A partner can be a B-schooler's husband/ wife/ fiancé/ fiancée/ girlfriend/ boyfriend. There are also a ton of other scenarios eg: with kids/ long distance... etcetera. A lot of partners struggle with the experience actually, and I’ve found a comprehensive book that looks at how to have a successful B-school partner life is The Unofficial Guide to B-School Partner Life: Balancing between the B-School Bubble and Reality. At the end of it all, B-school is what you make of it, if you are a student or a partner. The key is communications and transparency.
