Exactly gurpreet
if we dont assume that these two are the teams
lets say if these two are the bird names
then the roof may be home to these birds
in that case D is the best shoice

Well D can not be the answer. Look at the question carefully

Quote:
Often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum's roof was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980

"Often said to like an egg crate" is modifying " the Omni Coliseum's roof" that is equal to " the roof of the Omni Coliseum". Thus " often said to look like an egg crate" is is modifying the roof; i.e. it is describing roof.

In the answer option D, " Often said to look like an egg crate" is modifying or describing "Omni Coliseum" , which is wrong. Hence option D can not be the answer, since it is changing the meaning.

Now, in option C, "often said to look like an egg crate" correctly modifies "the roof." Also, it says that the Omni Coliseum was home to someone, which is correct, because according to the question the roof was the home to someone, but it is logical that roof can not be the home anyone. Even if we think that Atlanta Hawks and Atlanta Flames are birds then there home can be the nest but can not be the roof.

Therefore, Option C is clear and well constructed, hence Option C is the answer.

Amusing question =]

A. Often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum's roof was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980--> I think it would be very difficult living on top of a roof.

B. The Omni Coliseum. home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980, is often said to look like an egg crate, and its roof is distinctive.---> an egg crate shaped coliseum would definitely be a sight to behold but im sure its not what the author mean't xD

C. Noted for its distinctive roof, often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980-->Correct

D. The distinctive roof of the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980-->Living on the roof again >.< maybe when zombies attk

E. Noted for its distinctive roof, the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980-->Egg crate shaped Coliseum again

it is crucial to understand the meaning of the sentence here:
OC was home to AH from 72-97 and to AF from 72-80.
the roof of the OC is often said to look like an egg crate.

A. Often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum's roof was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980
illogical meaning - the roof was home? no.

B. The Omni Coliseum. home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980, is often said to look like an egg crate, and its roof is distinctive.
I don't know what the period stands after OC. i believe it is a typo. nevertheless, this one changes the meaning, and is still illogical:
OC was home to AH and AF.
OC is often said to look like an egg crate - this is incorrect.
its roof is distinctive - separate IC, well..still not the intended meaning, so B is out.

C. Noted for its distinctive roof, often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980
often said.. - correctly modifies roof. now the meaning is clear, and all the modifiers are in place.

D. The distinctive roof of the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980
the roof was home - no.

E. Noted for its distinctive roof, the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980
OC - said to look like an egg crate - no.

C is the correct answer.

The intended meaning is crucial to follow in this question as MV has pointed out.

First of all, we have to appreciate that a coliseum is sports complex. It is not an aviary where birds might be homed, especially on the roof.

Second, one can understand mistaking a roof housing birds as we have often heard of pigeons dwelling on roofs, but how can we take a roof taking flames? So, let’s realize they are just proper nouns and not collective nouns.

Third, when we say that x was home to Y, we do not mean that y lived at X. We often say that Eden Garden is the home to Kolkata Knight Riders, Feroz Shah Kotla is home the Delhi Dare Devils or Wankhede stadium is home the Mumbai Indians, but we are not implying that these teams are physically living there. The home is a metaphor here.

Please re-visit the question in the light of the above points.

This is a very poorly worded question and answer choice C has a big mistake in it. It is not clear what often said to look like an egg crate modifies i.e. the dome or the stadium and creates a huge ambiguity.

This is exactly why i rejected the choice.
additional error : It takes for granted that ATLANTA HAWKS and FLAMES is a team. I thought ATLANTA HAWKS are birds native to ATLANTA. Very poor question. mikemcgarry will GMAC assume that we know ATLANTA HAWKS is a team and not birds??

A. Often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum's roof was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980

B. The Omni Coliseum. home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980, is often said to look like an egg crate, and its roof is distinctive.

C. Noted for its distinctive roof, often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980

D. The distinctive roof of the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980

E. Noted for its distinctive roof, the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980

As I understand this and in addition to Daagh's view on the meaning of the sentence, below is the analysis of each option:

Short Explanation:

Understand the meaning:

I found that the best way to solving this problem was understanding the meaning by breaking up the sentence.
There are 4 main items:
The Omni Coliseum; Omni Coliseum's Roof; Egg Crate; The 2 Atlanta teams.

Now match the items.

Correct Match 1: The Omni Coliseum was home to 2 Atlanta teams. (Hence Omni Coliseum is a stadium)
Correct Match 2: Omni Coliseum's Roof looked like an Egg Crate.

Incorrect Mismatch 1: The Omni Coliseum looked like an Egg Crate. (Eliminate B & E)
Incorrect Mismatch 2: The Roof was home to the 2 teams. (Eliminate A & D)

Detailed Explanation:

A. Often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum's roof was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980. The meaning is distorted because this states that the "roof" was home to the 2 Atlanta teams. INCORRECT.

B. The Omni Coliseum. home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980, is often said to look like an egg crate, and its roof is distinctive. This correctly suggests that the Omni Coliseum was home to the 2 teams, but the Coliseum itself did not look like an egg crate. Its roof did. Also, there is no need for a comma between "egg crate" and "and its roof", because there are only 2 thoughts (as opposed to more than 2, in which case a comma would be required). INCORRECT.

C. Noted for its distinctive roof, often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980. "Noted for its distinctive roof" is modifying "The Omni Coliseum". No problem with that. Also "Often said to look like an egg crate", is providing more information on the "distinctive roof", meaning the roof looked like an egg crate. Again no problem. And finally, it says that "the Omni Coliseum" was the home to the 2 teams....(and not the roof), which is also correct. CORRECT.

D. The distinctive roof of the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980. This says that the roof looked like an egg crate. That's correct. However, it also goes on to suggest that the roof was home to the 2 teams. The roof cannot be a home. The Coliseum was the home. INCORRECT.

E. Noted for its distinctive roof, the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980.
This option suggests that the Omni Coliseum was often said to look like an egg crate. That's awkward, especially when we have a "roof" in the picture. The roof looked like an egg crate. INCORRECT.

My POE (I chose E, and I still believe it is a better choice than C):
A) ROOF is not home to the hawks
B) End of the sentence is not parallel
C) "Often said to look like an egg crate" is a modifier sandwiched between two clauses. Is it the distinctive roof that looks like an egg create or the coliseum itself?
D) Same as A
E) Perfect, "looks like an egg crate" clearly modifies Coliseum and there is no vagueness here.

I would love to know why E is incorrect.

Looks like this is more of a meaning question with some modifiers playing around in good way :)

Is there not any vagueness with answer choice C? "often said to look like an egg crate can modify the Coliseum or the roof since it is sandwiched in between two clauses. I get that the intended meaning of the sentence is to say the ROOF looked like an egg crate, but honestly if we didn't know what the Coliseum or what the roof looked like, I think its very fair to assume the Coliseum itself could resemble an egg crate.

How can someone know that both the nouns are names of a team when he/she reads about for the 1st time ? If I were to make question which includes names of Indian Kabaddi teams I definitely can't expect everyone to understand the question. I think it's a poor question.

Re: Often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum's roof was hom [#permalink]
A. Often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum's roof was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980
This portrays as though the roof was the home and not OMNI Coliseum

B. The Omni Coliseum. home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980, is often said to look like an egg crate, and its roof is distinctive.
This gives us a reasoning as though the hawks are looking like egg

C. Noted for its distinctive roof, often said to look like an egg crate, the Omni Coliseum was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980
This nails the reasoning yes Omni coliseum was the home whose roof looked like an egg

D. The distinctive roof of the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980
Similar flawed reasoning as A

E. Noted for its distinctive roof, the Omni Coliseum, often said to look like an egg crate, was home to the Atlanta Hawks from 1972-1997 and the Atlanta Flames from 1972-1980
Same reasoning As A
Hence IMO C
