Re: Almost gave up studying... Ended up with a 770 (Q:49, V:48) [#permalink]
Thanks! When I first took the OG diagnostic, I did rather poorly on the verbal section. But, after going through the study material, it actually came pretty naturally for me. I was raised in southern US, an area known for it's poor grammar and highly idiomatic language. So, I had to be careful to follow the "rules" rather than what sounded correct in the SC questions. The RC and CR questions seemed easier to me. My biggest piece of advice would be to find some study material that is GMAT specific. Normally a good book will teach you some of the "tricks" to watch out for in typical verbal questions. MGMAT has a section in each chapter of the type of choices you may find on the GMAT (the MGMAT SC book is especially good). So on test day, I was able to identify the tricky answer choices and rule them out. After ruling out answers you know to be wrong, you can spend your time on the one or two choices left over and save some time.

On the practice tests my verbal was in the 46-47 range mostly.

Just in case anyone cares... I forgot to add my post-GMAT plans/actions. I applied to five MSF programs that I chose after spending hours and days comparing. I ended up choosing Tulane, Washington University in St. Louis, Boston College, Vanderbilt and LSE. I was offered admission to all five (which made my decision extremely difficult). In the end I chose Vanderbilt and will be starting the program with about 39 other students in August. I can't wait! Any other MSF hopefuls out there?

To be clear, six weeks is not enough time to adequately prepare for the test. Once I had procrastinated away almost a month I got up one morning, counted the days left until the test and basically figured out how many pages of study material I needed to cover each day to make it through the MGMAT books. I probably devoted 150-160 hours to studying in 40 days (not including the quick practice questions on my phone that I did constantly). Having to rush the process sucks, so try to avoid that mistake.
