Yes it is still (C).The low levels of calcium is because the disease does not allow the body to absorb calcium.

This is a cause-effect type of question where the cause and effect roles have been reversed.

Low levels of calcium-----Disease.(according to question)

But (C) says Disease-----Low levels of calcium

C

Since Laryngeal polyps blocks the absorption of calcium, the diet would not be effective.

Is this a flaw or a weaken question? How to identify this? Whats the main difference between the two ? and their approaches? How to use elimination to solve this? Please provide detailed explanation.

Researchers have noticed that people whose blood shows abnormally low levels of calcium usually have laryngeal polyps, which can permanently damage vocal cords and result in partial or even total loss of voice. In order to reduce the risk of polyps, the researchers recommend a diet high in calcium-rich foods such as dairy and green, leafy vegetables.

Which of the following, if true, most strongly suggests that following the researchers' recommendation would NOT be effective?

a)Dairy contains compounds that are difficult for many people to digest.

b)Laryngeal polyps sometimes disappear without treatment.

c)Laryngeal polyps cause a change in body chemistry that blocks the absorption of calcium.

d)Fresh vegetables are not always available in all seasons.

e)Low levels of calcium can sometimes be remedied with vitamin pills.

C declares that poly causes low calcium and weakening. C is typical causal weakener. if argument said that X creates Y, weakener can say Y creates X.
B a weakener of the type no x but y still exist.

D is correct.

the book CRITICAL REASONING BIBLE is wonderful for this causal relation.

EXCEPT question required you to read well but contains no trick answer choice and so never be 700 level question.

The argument says dairy and green, leafy vegetables so even if vegetables are not available the argument does not say anything about dairy.....
I think C is a better option.

I am wondering how the OA - could be correct???
In the Stimulus, the researchers are discussing ways to reduce the risk (i.e preventing the disease than curing the disease), but the OA provides after effects of the disease than preventing. Isn't something wrong with the OA.

Experts please help.

Hi navigator123,

The stimulus says that low calcium causes laryngeal polyps (low calcium -> laryngeal polyps)
but if we can prove that relation b/w cause and effect are in opposite way i.e. if we prove that (laryngeal polyps -> low calcium) then the researcher's reccomendation will not be effective.

Weaken Q

To weaken this plan, we need a choice that shows that the plan won't work as expected.

(A) Dairy contains compounds that are difficult for many people to digest. - Wrong: Irrelevant

(B) Laryngeal polyps sometimes disappear without treatment. - Wrong: Irrelevant

(C) Laryngeal polyps cause a change in body chemistry that blocks the absorption of calcium. - Correct: This shows that the plan won't work.

(D) Fresh vegetables are not always available in all seasons. - Wrong: Irrelevant

(E) Low levels of calcium can sometime be remedied with vitamin pills. - Wrong: Irrelevant

But isnt the researcher talking about preventing Polyps? And Option C says that the body will not absorb calcium - doesn't this mean that the person is already infected ?
