I just graduated college and have the summer off before I begin work, so I figured I'd just get it out of the way. Since the score is good for 5 years I figured taking it 2 years before I applied was still a safe bet.

Oh also just to clarify, when I say class of '15 I mean I am a '13 applicant to graduate in '15.

Congrats on your score. I see consistently had Q50 in all mocks. I have a couple of questions for you.

1. Are MGMAT and Kaplan Quant questions close to the Real Thing ? If yes then how close are they ?
2. The same for Verbal ? Were the texts in RC n CR more complicated than the OGs or Kaplan/MGMAT Cats ?

akhilesh: I would say that both Kaplan and MGMAT questions are pretty close to the GMAT. I didn't have as much experience with Kaplan, but at least for MGMAT I found that the real GMAT "felt" pretty close to an MGMAT section. If I had to choose one, I would say MGMAT was maybe a little tougher than the real GMAT (the toughest questions were more challenging, there were maybe a few more of them and I could see more "tricks"). Some things that MGMAT likes to do:

1. DS questions where you have to try a lot of cases with different numbers. The real GMAT had these too, but at least for my sitting they weren't as challenging.
2. Absolute value questions where some of the solutions don't work (you solve for both positive and negative and one of them doesn't agree with the original equation). I don't remember encountering that on the real GMAT.
3. Questions where if you assume everything is an integer you'll get them wrong.
4. Hard geometry problems.

Of course all of this evidence is anecdotal, but from what I've read on the forums, MGMAT does tend to be a bit more tricky. I'm not saying the real GMAT doesn't have questions like those above, but I think it's more straightforward.

I can't comment on the Kaplan Verbal stuff, but MGMAT was solid for that too. I would still use the OG though if you have a choice.

If MGMAT tests are close, then I think I should practice them. But I do agree on the part that the Quant is quite difficult. In my last mock, all the 37 questions were of 700-800 level and some questions were very difficult. Especially DS. I had major timing issues. Guess my quant is all right.

My major concern is Verbal, which still troubles me. I have access to all 3 OGs + Supplements. But I read around to find that these days GMAT throws SCs which are very complicated.

Does real GMAT SC difficulty go beyong OGs ?

I wouldn't say that it goes beyond what you'd find on GMATPrep and the OGs. Keep in mind the OG is organized in order of difficulty though, so make sure you review the last block of questions in each section (there's a guide posted on the forums for the OG12 which gives the difficulty of questions).

There are tons of other resources around on the forum for more challenging SC questions, but I would stick to MGMAT and OG as much as possible because they include good explanations of the answers. The best way to improve SC in my opinion is to do questions in small batches (maybe 5-10) and immediately review the answers and read the explanations. At the beginning you should be reading the answers to both the questions you got right and the ones you got wrong.

Hey gmatkoopa,

Congrats for a great score !!

If you remember, I replied to you when you had 1st posted your mock score.

Further, I had also posted my score on GMAT Prep 2 for your reference: 700

Now my test is on 9th July (Sat) and my recent scores are:

MGMAT 2: 740 (Q49,V42)
MGMAT 3: 730 (Q49, V40)
GMATPrep1: 730 (Q50, V38) (this is d score 4m d test I took today at home)

My target score is >=760 .. What do you should I do in the coming week?

I have till now completed following material:

1. MGMAT SC guide
2. CR Powerscore bible
3. OG 12 SC and CR sections

Further, I have been doing the below points regularly:

4. Practicing RC from Aristotle book RC99
5. Following discussions on various forums such as GC, Manhattan GMAT, Urch, and Pagalguy

From tomorrow, I am planning to revise my SC and CR notes, do KAPLAN 800 book, continue to practice RCs, and take 1 mock (3 MGMATs and 2 GMAT Preps (re-installed) - 5 days) everyday and analyze my mistakes...

You think I am on the right track ??

Cheers! TIA

BearBelly: It sounds like you're on the right track! A couple recommendations:

1. Make sure your practice in the last week is a mix between doing/reviewing new CATs and looking at the mistakes you made on past tests. Especially for SC, finding patterns in the mistakes you make is critical to avoid making them in the future.
2. Take the last day or two off before your exam. Do not go into the test center CAT-fatigued. You can still review questions here and there, but don't do any full tests the day before.
3. Read chineseburned's AWA guide and do some practice there.

Thanks again for your advice after I took my diagnostic, it was helpful to move my test date up. Best of luck next week!

Thanks man!

I will keep these pointers in my mind ... Moreover, since I am not a native English speaker (I am from India), I am facing timing issues in verbal and I am trying to minimize those too ..

Wish me luck !

Congratulations on your magnificent score.

I loved these summary points:

5. Take a day or two off before the exam
7. Take all of the breaks even if you don't think you need them
8. Think positive thoughts going in and promise yourself a reward at the end
