Re: Yale SOM 2012 - Calling All Applicants (Class of 2014) [#permalink]
Does anyone know where I can find the letter of rec instructions for this years app? Last years thread has the following:

Quote:
Recommendation Letter
Please write a one- to two-page assessment of the applicant that addresses his or her personal qualities, strengths and weaknesses, and potential for achievement. We are looking for your candid and accurate assessment of the applicant’s potential to be a successful leader and what specific traits the applicant possesses that evidence this potential.
• Please describe your relationship to the applicant and the nature and frequency of your interactions.
• Please be as specific as possible and use concrete examples whenever possible.
• Do not incorporate anything drafted by the candidate in your recommendation or have the candidate submit the recommendation on your behalf.

Just want to make sure there aren't any changes before I send out my rec instruction packets. Thanks!

I read somewhere that Yale SOM class size is expanding 30% starting with class of 2014. I couldn't find any more info on it. Does anyone know if this is true?

They had plans to increase the class size (gradually) for awhile now. It will expand based on few factors (if they do happen) such as increase in Yale Silver Scholars program, completion of new facilities (so increased size in class can be accommodated without issues), etc.

Thanks for the info. Not that it was important, but I saw that and was thrilled that I might have a better shot at getting in. Would love to go there. Just need to focus on turning in a good app.

I doubt the avg stats will go down due to increase in size. It probably means that ppl on waitlist will see more movement (compared to previous yrs). Good luck.

Debating if I should do R1 and r2. Stats are in the box but here it is again:

School: USC (Univ of Southern California)
Major: Physics
GPA: 3.81
GMAT: 760 (99%) Q49 V46

Don't know if I will have enough time to do this app and hbs 2+2

I am currently a second-year MBA student at the Yale School of Management. I highly recommend the program for everyone and anyone. Professionally, socially and academically, the program here has exceeded my expectations in every regard. More importantly, I have had the time of my life being a part of it and am willing to share my experiences.

I am a long time reader here but an infrequent poster. However, I do have some free time these days so can serve as a resource for those making their MBA decisions. Please feel free to ask whatever questions you guys may have and I will try to add value in any way I can.

Good luck!

Solb22 - I had a complete change of heart from what I wrote on my business school application and entered my first year with an open heart and an open mind. Although I aspired to pursue finance, I looked into a bunch of fields before deciding to do investment banking. I interned at a major investment bank this summer.

In terms of banking, the recruiting at Yale SOM was very strong last year. Out of 230 students, 40 did investment banking internships and about 30 did it at bulge bracket banks. The previous year's interns also boasted a high internship rate and a robust array of top bank placements... Key advantages were that we have: (1) a very loyal alumni base; (2) a small class size, allowing a higher percentage to land internships; and (3) the close proximity to New York, allowing us to do a lot of informational interviews.

Regarding your question in the post above mine - I would simply apply when you are ready. I know the response is trite but it is the truth. The decision would be based on at what stage your essays / recommendation letters are... Logistically-speaking however, you might want to apply R2 if you haven't visited the campus (since imo, visiting Yale SOM definitely helps you contextualize the culture / special feel of the place here). On the other hand, from a strategic point of view, R2 might also see an abnormal increase in application numbers since the economy took a nosedive in August, which may have prompted a lot of future applicants to rush & jam through their application for R2 of this year...

@Mos Wow smart man! You knew what I was going to ask before I could do so!

Thats great to hear. IB and Consulting placement are easy indicators for a Bschools strength. I never bought into the whole "this curriculum is better," because imo, job placement and alumni support are the most important factors-including location as well.

I'm happy to hear everyone did so well. I am applying to the SOM program with the stats posted. I haven't been able to visit-I go to school in CA. I hope this does not reflect poorly on my application.

I have a few more questions I'd like to ask offline-so feel free to PM me!

All the best

Can any of you guys comment on the essay questions, more specifically the first 4 questions, please. They list 4 questions, at 150 words each - and state that it should be no more than 600 words. I've written an essay that is as close to this as humanly possible, but for another school, however it's written as one big essay encompassing all the aspects required by Yale. Does anyone know if its possible to submit one essay or if they want it partitioned? Thanks guys. I plan on submitting in R1.

One of Pythagoras' maxim says "Do not say a little in many words, but a great deal in few."

I would try to make your essays as lean and efficient as possible. As you have already stated, the essay lengths are 150 words. Make sure you adhere to that. Pretend you are relaying your message to a company's CEO or an important venture capitalist. Get to the point with clear and concise answers. Admin reviews plow through dozens of applications a day. Pretend you are in their shoes. Do you really want to ramble or discuss some (perhaps sentimental, but overall) irrelevant details? Put forth the most powerful message you can and usually that involves creating an electrifying message in a short, direct and convincing summary...
