McDonough 2012 - Calling All Applicants

Let us know how it goes. I'm applying R2, and if you think it's worthwhile, I might be able to make the drive up from NC to attend one of those events.

Will do ebonn. McD offers a rebate on the application fee if you attend an on-campus event, so that signals to me that they value the effort very highly. Then again, unless I'm misremembering, you have a military service background, so I think you already get that discount. I'll report back just the same.

Hello All!

I went to Experience Georgetown last Monday 9/19 and had a great time.

I got there about an hour before my scheduled time and sent it just wandering around campus and checking out the scenery. It was really nice, although there was a lot of construction going on, especially near the business school. Speaking of which, the Hariri building looks awesome and you could tell how new it is. I havent spent any time in my adult life in DC, but I have friends who either have lived or live there now who absolutely love it. It seems like a pretty cool town though the potential cost of living for what you get in DC does worry me a bit.

As for the experience itself once I got to the office I spoke with the receptionist for a bit and spoke with others who were showing up for EG also. We sat there for a while and at about 1040 my guide showed up and escorted us to class. Me and two other guys sat in on Professor Blemaster's Mergers and Acquisitions class. He started discussing private equity and even touched on the RJR Nabisco LBO from back in the 80s, which is something I'm currently reading about in "Barbarians at The Gate", so I found that particularly interesting. He's a very engaging professor and I had a great time visiting his class.

After class we went back to the admissions office and went on a tour of the building with 1 of 2 MBA2s. It didnt take very long considering its one building but it was interesting to see its set up. We then returned to the admin office for an info session headed by our two 2nd-year tour guides. The session itself was pretty standard as far as going through the admission process, but afterwards them answering our questions and describing their experiences was great. Shortly after they left and a group of about 8 current students, both 1st and 2nd years came in and introduced themselves and gave a little background info. They then each described their respective experiences and insight to McDonough which was great as well. I then spoke to a couple of them indivually afterward and everyone was extremely helpful and gave some great info and advice. All the students there are really enthusiastic about the school and it shows, and with the small class size everyone knows each other and theres a great sense of community there. All in all it was a great trip and Gtown definitely jumped a few spots on my board and I think I'd have a great time if I went there.

I also met Kelly Wilson at an admissions event this past Thursday at an MBA Fair here in Atlanta, and she couldn't have been any friendlier. I told her about my visit earlier in the week and the interaction I've had with other members of admin. We chatted for about 5 minutes and she seemed really impressed by how much I knew about the program and how enthusiastic I was about it. She gave me her card afterwards to reach out to her and made sure she remembered my name before I left.

Thus far in my research and experience I'm really impressed with Georgetown and look forward to getting my Rd1 app in in the next few weeks.

I know some others went to Experience Georgetown, namely Joel and gablaze. I'd love to here some of your thoughts/impressions on Gtown at this point.

Is any one here in for Round 1? If so how are you're essays/apps going. I have some solid drafts for all but essay#3 which looks a little different and is gonna take me some time.

Is anybody else surprised at how skimpy the McD app is? "Half a page double-spaced" really isn't all that much for an essay. About 4 meaty sentences and you're out of room. Also, no "Activities" or "Professional Affiliations" sections in the application itself. I'm finding it hard to tag all the bases I'm including in my other apps...

I'm having the same problem. Its really tough to speak with any kind of passion about your activities in half a page. When I first looked at the essays I thought they would be a sinch given the short length but I'm having a lot of trouble condensing everything to meet the page limit.

Also, they request a double-spaced resume? Anybody else find that more than a little odd?

I'm also curious about the 10 pt double space resume. Is everyone doing this? I imagine the answer is clearly yes, but it seems odd.

There was a webinar a few days ago with Georgetown adcom people to answer last minute questions. This one came up again and again. It's not a typo, that's really how they want it. I personally think it makes the resume look very unprofessional (after all the effort that goes in to tweaking margins and spacing and getting it just right), but that is how they want it.

Re-applicant submitting in R2 here... I applied in R3 and was admitted last year, but family obligations forced me to decline my spot in the Class of 2013.

Not only did they change the essay topics, but they also made the formatting requirements very restrictive. Good thing I still qualify as a re-applicant so I could include whatever I could not write in the other essays in the re-applicant essay.

As for the resume format, it's the same format that they asked for last year. I think it's better to follow their request than insist on submitting a resume with your own format. Not following their guidelines will only make you look stubborn.

Did anybody else get an email from AdCom, giving them an extension to submit in R1?
