(C) omits the verb "are" which is necessary to complete the sentence.

a) due to their enhancement of reproduction or survival, but that they are
Shouldn't "due to" modify nouns with verbs of the form "to be" (here its are) and "because of" modify verbs...
From http://www.editingandwritingservices.co ... takes.html
Due to or Because of? Due to modifies nouns and is generally used after some form of the verb to be (is, are, was, were, etc.). Jan's success is due to talent and spunk (due to modifies success). Because of should modify verbs. Ted resigned because of poor health (because of modifies resigned).
In this case only A and B survive...
I picked A..
Answer: A

due to their enhancement of .... doesn`t that seem wordy and passive compared to the clearer and more concise ...because they enhance... ??

Sure.. agree with clarity and concise. Actually I picked D myself and then I vaguely remembered something about "due to" and "because" usage.
Although concise and clear D might be incorrect usage, so should be ideally incorrect.

try to replace "due to" with "caused by". If this makes sense then it might be OK but here this doesn't make sense.

C looks the simplest and most concise: no awkward noun "enhancement of" or clause "survival [that] they enhance" , and "but " is OK (are not the products.. but ..by-products). "are" is redundant in D's "but are".
E is non-standard.

c) because they enhance reproduction or survival, but
d) because they enhance reproduction or survival, but are
e) because of enhancing reproduction or survival, but are
(D)? maintains structure after the first comma, precise.
(given that my a-- is getting kicked by SC, I can't be too sure anyway)

I would pick D. Only D and E ends with but are. D sounds better

(C)
Seems 'are' is redundant in other choices.
We can make a shorter easier version, if we eliminate the middle part.

Not X but Y. How can X be a noun and Y a verb in D? I prefer C. Please clarify. Thanks,
