Becuase is ok here, not "due to". I think that "are not...but are" is mor ok in // than "are not ...but". So is D

Good point there arorag. However, I think the sentence structure in this case is:

I argued that Pucci is not a dog but a cat.
I argued that Pucci is not a dog but is a cat.

I hope this helps. Thanks

due to means caused by. here because is appropriate. so A and B are out. E is awkward. now b/w C and D as already illustrated by billyjeans, D wins.

The "is not x but is y" phrases is needed if it is inside and after the "that clause"

So ordinarily we would say "it is not x but y", but in this case "I argue that it is not x but is y". "Is" is needed to make them parallel. I can't quote this from an OE, but I have encountered several problems on SC1000, and it's the case every time. Hope this helps.

billyjeans, could you post OE that you mentioned? Somehow, I am still not clear why D should be the correct answer.

If I look at the use of idiom "not X, but Y", C is the obvious choice. If I look at the parallel structure on both sides of "but", D looks correct. But, then use of idiom not X, but Y gets incorrect.

Whether is/are is implicit or explicit has been totally whimsical.

are not X but Y automatically gets the are

Traits are not X but Y means traits are Y does not just mean traits Y

So are again is redundant IMO
