I currently have a fulltime job and I am obtaining my MBA part time from Uconn. I have taken 5 classes so far with another 14 to go. My current position is for a privately owned company with roughly 500 employees that I been at for roughly three years. We have been on a promotion and raise freeze for the past year and half do to the current economic conditions. I dont see any current room for advancement at the company and feel I am paid below average for my job duties and skills.
What I want to know is, is it worth persuing a summer internship with another company and leaving the current company I work for. I never took the time while an undergrad to persue an internship as I was never exposed to the option through my school. I feel I missed out on an important foundation of finding a good job while in school and dont want to miss out on this sort of opportunity again. Is it benefitial to get an internship as an MBA student? Is it too early since I am just finished the first 1/4 of my MBA program? I would have to leave my job behind in order to do it, is this a good idea to do? I would like some advise from anyone that has been in these shoes or accepts MBA intern applicants.
Thanks in advance for your time and advise.
A few thoughts on this:
- you should check with your school about what, if any, on-campus recruiting support you'll have as a PT student. Some programs do not allow PT students to participate in on-campus recruiting activities, so this could shape your decision.
- being 1/4 through your MBA is probably too soon to do an internship, since most MBA interns are 1/2 through their program
- leaving your job is risky, especially in this economy. FT students know they'll be going back to school at the end of the internship. You have no such security. Are you comfortable with the chance that at the end of your internship you'll be unemployed?
- many intern employers see the internship as a recruiting tool to fill full-time positions with MBAs the following summer. Because you're in a PT program, you won't be finished with your degree by then and this could make you a less attractive intern candidate.
Overall, I think it's probably possible to get an internship in a PT program, but incredibly risky. Whether you're comfortable with those risks is entirely up to you.
