This site is supposed to be excellent for PE:

www.pehub.com

It is somewhat exclusive and only the PE/VC clubs at the top MBA programs will be able to provide you with access to it. Apparently, this site also assists with finding internships in PE/VC and helping current MBAs get connected with niche PE/VC firms that don't recruit on-campus.

Estimating the Senior Associate and Analyst/Associate numbers is more difficult because the turnover at these position is rapid (2-4 years). Our educated guess is that there are 100 Senior Associates and 150-200 Analysts/Associates nationwide.

Wow! No wonder it's so hard to break into!

Awesome find agold!

(warning: potentially dumb question)

So there are funds of different sizes - which firms are representative of each bracket? ie what're some small-mid-cap funds?

thanks :)

My thoughts:

Small cap = < $300M assets under management. These are generally small family/multi-family offices or start-up funds.

Examples:
https://www.continentalinvestors.com/index.htm
https://www.alpine-investors.com/
https://www.sverica.com

Middle market = The definition varies. In my mind, it's $300M all the way up to $5B of assets under management. This is a huge range, obviously. Some examples:

https://www.clearlightpartners.com/
https://www.midoceanpartners.com/
https://www.wppartners.com/
https://www.waudcapital.com/
https://www.brentwood.com

Large cap = > $5B assets under management. The big and very established funds.

Some examples:

https://www.gtcr.com
https://www.kkr.com
https://www.mdcp.com

FYI - I was trying to see which funds have a strong focus on healthcare/healthcare IT..Here are the ones I've found so far:

- Bain Capital Ventures
- Summit
- DFJ
- KPCB
- Sequoia
- TA
- RoundTable Healthcare Partners

I'll update this list as I find more :)

Considering you'll (likely) be in Chicago, look into:

https://www.roundtablehp.com/

They're one of the largest funds focused exclusively on healthcare.

That's an amazing list - it's nice to see it. Alas, however, it's not complete. I live in Menlop Park, work at a life science start-up, and have just nabbed funding for another company. That said, there are a bundle of life science/healthcare VCs that are not included on this list, as some are backing my companies. An example is Alta Partners. I'm not going to fill in all the blanks, but simply wanted to state that there are a bundle of firms not on the list.

Really? Don't be that guy. We welcome you here, but seriously? I obviously wasn't trying to make an all inclusive list of US Healthcare VCs, but rather trying to get AC a starter list.

I was serious when I said it was a great list - I certainly wouldn't have dug it up. My only point was that while the list is great, that there's even more out there...it wasn't meant as a knock..sorry if you perceived it that way. The comment was meant to be helpful, not critical.

I used to be at a major life science VC shop, so I'm pretty familiar with the firm landscape. Here's a list of VCs who are either life science only or have major life science activities (off the top of my head, I will add more as I remember them):

Alta Partners
New Enterprise Associates
Frazier Healthcare Ventures
Oxford Bioscience Partners

New Leaf Venture Partners
Quaker BioVentures
Highland Capital Partners
Abingworth Management
HLM Venture Partners
HealthCare Ventures
Skyline Ventures
Bay City Capital
