Penalty of Not answering [#permalink]
07 Dec 2006, 15:10
In my latest GMATprep, I scored a 690 41Q 44 V, however during the Q, I felt great, I could answer most questions and was thinking I was doing well. Got to #33, saw I had 10 minutes left, and got to work. Then, inexplilcably, TIME UP! Whaaa???
So, 33 counted becuase I was on it, and because I didn't answer it, it was wrong, but 34-37 were penalized. ( I missed 11 of 33 in all for a 41, I missed 15 of 37 yesterday and scored a 48)
Q1: has anyone else seen this, time all the sudden runing out ? (unless I worked the problem for 10 minutes, which I really don't believe--but possible)
Q2: how much of a penalty are unanswered questions?
Thanks!

I haven't seen the case you described in question 1 - the time just inexplicably ran out for you? Do you mean to say it was a technical glitch?
As far as your second question is concerned - unanswered questions are a significant penalty I think. I've been having the same problems with completing the exams as well. If I'm not mistaken, the OG says that if you don't answer 5 questions on verbal your score can drop from a 90 percentile to a 75 percentile (strike rate being equal in both cases).
My advice? Focus on speed and try your best to complete all questions even if you are guessing on a couple of them here or there.

Wow, I haven't read that myself, but sounds severe!
I don't normally run out of time, but sometimes I do. I hate leaving a question knowing I can get it with a few more seconds! I have to be careful--it just means my Q is not sharp enough.
Most likely, the last ten minutes flew by so fast I didn't notice. But, I am about 50% sure that it was a glitch. I will never know. It's not a big deal (it is just a practice!). But, I thought I was on the way to a pretty good Q score. I need all the confidence I can get!
