Penn State or UMASS Amherst for online mba? [#permalink] New post 21 Jun 2010, 11:24
I'm debating about either Penn State or UMass Amherst for online MBA. Which holds higher rank? I live in California, and would definitely like to know which school of the two is more well known over here. Any suggestions or feedback?

Thanks!

I'm no expert on distance learning MBA's, but Penn State is a well known brand nationwide with a loyal following and huge alumni base. UMass Amherst is fairly unknown outside the northeast. Whereas Penn State has arguably the 3rd best business school in Pennsylvania (after Penn and CMU), UMass Amherst gets swamped by a plethora of better known business schools in MA (HBS, MIT, BU, BC, Babson, Northeastern, and even Hult and Brandeis).

I'm surprised athat Northeastern is better than UMass. I always thought they were for profit since they advertise so heavily. The $60k tutition makes me wonder if it's really worth it if I plan to stay in California.

For full-time programs, US News has Penn State ranked at #48, Northeastern at #62, and UMass-Amherst is unranked (does not make the top 100). I think Carnegie Mellon has the best online MBA and several people at my company have completed it. Glancing at the list of online MBA programs at BusinessWeek, after CMU, an online MBA from Indiana, Arizona State, or Penn State would probably garner the most respect nationwide.

But the iMBA is not the same as SMEAL, would it matter? It costs over 56K for a degree that isn't identical to SMEAL. Is it worth it?
