The book says the answer is d. Why is E. wrong?

3*10^4 is greater than 4*10^3 by what percent?

A. 25%
B. 75%
C. 133 1/3%
D. 650%
E. 750%

The way I did it....

30,000 > 4,000 by what percent

30,000- 4,000 = 26,000

26,000 = x/100 (4000)

x= 650

So If the question read 30,000 is what percent of 4,000 would the answer than be 750%? I think this is where I went wrong.

yes, exactly, it's the "greater than" that we have to be careful with.

rich: where did you get this question from? This is not a genuine trick they've used. This is just nonsense, trying to question reader's ability to understand the question correctly by playing game of nonobvious ambiguity.
