since, they are talking about arrangement, order is important, so we must use permutation:

10P4 = 10*9*8*7 = 5,040 ways?

I agree.

Permutation=order matters and each combination is different from the other.

In this problem the keyword is "PLACES". this means that each has it's own location. If we were to put them in bag, the order wouldnt matter anymore.

Hope this helps.

let me explain u wid simple logic..

u have 4 places and 10 paintings..

__ __ __ __

for d first place u hav to choose from 10 paintings..u can either choose 2 or 5 or 7etc..so u have 10 options

since u hav selected 1 of d 10 paintings for d first place u r left wid 9 paintings..so again u hav 9 options

now u hav selected 2 of d 10 paintings u r left wid 8 paintings..so for d third place u have 8 options

now 3 of d 10 paintings r gone..so remaining 7 for d fourth place..so u have 7 options to select

finally wen u sum up..count d no. of options u hav i.e. 10x9x8x7 dats ur ans...hope this helps..:)
