Permanent Residency (Green Card) - Does it affect admissions [#permalink] New post 14 Mar 2009, 10:08
I got my green card yesterday. I am still waiting to hear R2 decisions from Booth, Sloan and Kellogg. I indicated a work visa when I applied to these schools a few months back.

Should I communicate the receipt of Green Card to the schools? Does this have any positive influence on my candidacy due to resident/international admit percentages which is typically 65%/35%.

I would think not. As a permanent resident, you still are under the "international" category. Congrats though - will help you get better student loan rates, have an easier time finding jobs etc.

You should definitely inform the schools. I dont think schools will treat you differently compared to other Indians, but your GC can push you over the line when it comes to breaking a tie with another international. Schools know that permanent residents and US citizens have the best bet as far as succeeding in this job market since they will have more opportunities. So, there may be a marginal benefit and when competition is intense any edge, even marginal, will be very helpful.

I got my green card last year while on the waitlist at Ross. While it did not help in getting the admit, I was considered on the WL longer than internationals who required a visa. Some schools have distinct categories for citizens, perm residents and internationals, while others club PR and internationals. If your future goals are in an industry that is tough w/o a gc, you could probably mention that too.
