Dont you need to have AS as part of the sentence. It seems like fencing master and dancing teacher are being introduced as examples, in which case you'd have to use AS instead of LIKE. I might be totally off on this one, but please throw in your thoughts. Thanks!

(B) as have been a private fencing master and dacing teacher [Hold it]

(C) what private fencing masters and dancing teachers were [ Hold it]

(D) what private fencing masters and dacing teachers are [Verb issue – eliminate it]

(E) just the same as private fencing masters and dancing teachers had been [Incorrect Past Perfect – eliminate it]

Between B and C

C correctly refers the verb

For me it is D.

You are talking about a fact here, and a fact is always mentioned in the present tense.

Can some one comment on above?

.. Also is it a rule that we cant use present perfect with "an earlier time"????

First of all I can not understand meaning of sentence.
Could someone please explain why B is not correct ? There is nothing for comparision in C.
