Peter got 30% of the maximum marks in an examination and failed by 10 marks. However, Paul who took the same examination got 40% of the total marks and got 15 marks more than the passing marks. What was the passing marks in the examination?

(1) 35
(2) 250
(3) 75
(4) 85
(5) 125

Lets the total marks in exam are X and passing is P.
so

X*.3/X*.4=(P-10)/(P+15)
P= 85

Did this one quickly in my head, didnt bother setting it up as an equation.
40%-30% = +15 - (-10)
10% = 25 marks.

Pass lies slightly below 35%
25+25+25+~12 = 87. Closest choice is 85
