Hi I have already posted it twice here in the GMATclub but since it is the best thread for the post I m posting it again. Sorry for multiple posts:
I have recently taken the GMAT and scored 740 Q49 V41.
I m in my 4th yr of undergrad-BBA in Accounting. I wanna do a PhD in either Accounting or Finance. My GPA is 3.93/4 and this is the highest GPA in the dept. Do u guys think I stand any chance in top-10, top-20 or perhaps in top-30? I have been very nervous on the GMAT-day and underperformed in Quant. I can easily score 51, at least 50 in Quant. Do u think my Quant 49 will hamper my chances of admission? Do u suggest me to retake for a better Quant score since PhD requires good quantitaive skills and b-school always looks for good quant skills in PhD candidates. In our undergrad, we completed 2 courses on calculus, 2 on statistics, 2 on business maths, 2 on economics. In all these courses I have 4, the highest possible grade
Plz suggest me wht to do. I m in a fix whether to retake the GMAT or not. I expect to get 770 or 780 InshaAllah if I retake. Thanx

My two cents: I'm trying hard, but I just _can't_ put myself in the shoes of Accounting faculty who'd read your application and say "boy, I wish he'd scored 51, but now with 49 he surely is very lousy at math"!
In other words, 740 is great and I think you'd waste your time trying to increase your score by 20-30 points. Being an undergrad in accounting, you have some competitive advantage because you know that stuff already (which most entering PhD students in Accounting don't), but you have to work on your SOP to prove that 1) you have the math/statistics background to succeed at the PhD level (which is awfully harder than GMAT quant), and 2) that you're interested in research. You already have part of 1) nailed but it's likely not enough to _impress_ -- you have the potential to succeed but you have no graduate math courses under your belt yet (real analysis, stochastic calculus, advanced linear algebra..)
Were you planning on Sept. 2006 enrollment? You're past the deadline for most schools in the US. However, if you're looking at Sept. 2007, then you can use next year to take some of these math courses and maybe be a RA for a teacher you had as an undergrad. Good luck!

Hi,
I'm Vivek here. I wish to pursue the PhD programme in the field of Economics at some of the premier institutes in the US in this field.
I do not have sufficient information regarding the colleges, the expectation of the programme at good colleges including the GMAT score and the financial expenses incurred and if any scholarships offered.
Currently I'm working in the software industry since last three yrs in Bangalore, India after having done my Bachelor of Engg.
Please guide in this regard.

Hi everyone,
I want to do a PhD in marketing but have very little clue as to what would make my application stand out for selection. I have a good-ish academic record and am confident of scoring 750 on the test. I am currently doing my MBA from KJ Somaiya, Mumbai. What all should i do now in terms of academics to ensure that i have a decent chance of getting selected at a good school. I have no published research and am yet to author a paper in marketing.

Hello All... I am really hoping for some great advice from whomever I can get the information from.
I am a recent graduate (25 years old) with a degree in Literature and am interested in doing the PHd in either Economics or Finance (preferably finance). I have no business background whatsoever and a very low g.pa of a 2.75ish from a state school (it's a very poor reflection of my capabilities,honestly). While I made many mistakes in my academic career, I am extremely capable and hardworking. I am willing to do WHATEVER it takes to become successful in graduate school... I would really love to get into a top school, but am uncertain of my chances. I am planning to study very long and hard to get a high score (780-800ish) on the gmat to circumvent my less than stellar transcript. I really want to succeed!
Should I get a masters in business, is it necessary? Is it possible for me to skip the masters and enter directly into the PHd if I take some extra classes? What should I do? Please help and thanks in advance.

Work-ex:
•Working since 1999 in various fields such as external audit and internal audit
•Worked as Trainee Academic Associate in premier B–School in India; IIM Ahmedabad, (IIM-A) For 1 Year
GMAT: I expect a GMAT score range of 700- 720
Also, I am preparing for CPA exam to look my CV stronger, will that help??

Given your pedigree, CPA is not going to help you get an offer from a PhD program in Accounting. In fact, having all those professional designations, you may have to get prepared to answer questions such as "why the hell did you need all this?" From a professional standpoint all these things look good but from an academic standpoint it may look unfocused -- to publish good research you usually need depth rather than breadth, so you may want to find a good story in your SOP to link CIA/CFE and CMA together..

Hi All,
Here is my profile:
BSc. Honors major economics minor math gpa 2.79
MSc. Strategic Makreting gpd 3.7
GMAT 720
I know my undergrad gpa is a major problem...
Experince:
1 year as research executive at Nielsen
1 year as research executive at a telecom company
lasslty, carried out my undergrad from best business school in pakistan
carried out msc from uk from a very mediocre uni ( easy guesses why tht was the case)
Q1. any hope for me to get into phd in US
Q2. what sort of uni
oh still pondering as to go for strategy or for marketing department

WIll getting a PhD in business from a decent European university help or harm my chances of getting into a top business school in the US for an MBA? Is there any way you can justify wanting an MBA when you already ahve a PhD in business. Thanks
