A PhD is business is a total waste of time. An MBA is more than sufficient. So you get your PhD and your overqualified for 98% of the jobs out there. Only route for you then is to become a professor.

Don't bother with a PhD unless you want to teach. MBAs from top schools are having a hard time finding decent work, a PhD is going to fare much worse.

I disagree with you Toronto. First, doing a PhD can give a sense of accomplishment to certain individuals. PhDs are indeed a big investment in time, energy and money and clearly, not many people are even able to get accepted in the program. Second, as far as saying that it's a waste of money, I would recommend you to check the link http://www.wilmott.com. Most jobs on that site require a PhD or MSc. It is a site for quant jocks and even MBAs/CFA are looked down upon :shock:

Some PhD positions are willing to pay 350k/year and well over :wink:

A PhD in business is NOT meant for industry. In fact, you will not even get admitted to any PhD program if you indicate that you want to go into any other field except business academia. So yes, Only if you do want to become a professor, you go into preparing for it. A typical PhD program demands enormous resources from the B School as well as from aspirants, who need to put in a minimum of four to five years in the process. Normally, if you intend to go into industry, an MBA is a sufficient preparation for the same.

A second option, though frowned upon by academicians is higher order consulting assignments in business. However, only a minority of PhD's go into these assignments.
