Hi Irina,

Honestly it was trial and error. I might have picked 10 on the actual test under the pressure and limited time!! =\ But to answer your question, what I did here after I drew the two lines (pretty straightforward, you'll always have four pieces), manipulating to where it would cross the most number of segments as possible. For the third line, I had it cross three out of the four segments so 4 (first two lines) + 3 (third line) = 7. Then when I drew the fourth line, I had it intersect mostly with my third line to generate 4 more lines to make it 11. Not sure if that answered your question but its the best I can explain! I wonder if there are any formulas that can help us with this type of question. Otherwise drawing a diagram is the only way to go...

There actually is a pattern

0 lines = 1 region
1 line = 2 regions
2 lines = 4 regions
3 lines = 7 regions
4 lines = 11 regions

I'm assuming 5 lines = 16 regions

This pattern is based on observation not logic. I'm sure there is a logical reasoning to it that makes sense though.
