Hi,

My Brief Profile:
-Indian IT male
-7 yrs WEx and now product owner and project lead. (My Age is 27 now)
-Decent Experience in social work. (worked in Hurricane relief and Flood relief in India)
-Did my Engineering from one of the top 20 colleges of India. (Institute of national Importance as per Indian Govt Act)
-I have a decent CGPA (7.94/10).
-Ranked 21st in my state for the national engineering entrance examination and I was 16yrs old when I started my engineering. The entrance examination is mandatory for all those who want to go to the top engineering colleges of India.
-One of the founding members of the literary society of my college.
-Have been recognized by my company for my hard work.
-One of the organizers of College cult fest.
-Participated in regional cricket tournaments.
-School Highest Scorer in United Nations exam for talent search. ( I am searching for the certificate. I might have misplaced it. So it might not count).

I gave my GMAT today. This was the second attempt. First attempt score was 620 (Q49V27). Second attempt score is 690 (Q44V41). The quant score is very bad and in now ways shows my quant capabilities. GMAT is a test of nerves and I panicked which is reflected in my Quant score.

Can someone please answer the following questions:
a) Should I retake.
b) Should I try to build my profile even more. I am planning to apply in Fall 2014.
c) I am trying for a Top 20 school such as UNC, Kelley. Duke is a dream for me and I really want to apply to that college.

I have practiced enough and there were times when I have been frustrated. There is a chance that I might improve but as is the case of probablity. The chances of improvement is 1/3. What if the score remains same or worse the score decreases.

Please help and suggest.

As a person who's gone through the admissions process this year, I can tell you that 690 is decent enough score and if you've apprehensions of improvement on GMAT then you rather concentrate on other aspects of your application. That said, a good GMAT score always helps, especially for a scholarship!

If you think your quant score isn't representative of your potential, and you've good grades in math/stats in undergrads it'll more or less mitigate the low score. But be ready to explain - Why low quant score in your essays/interviews especially when Indian IT males tend to score well in Quant.

My 2 cents:
- Top 20 schools is a good target but do talk to alumni, current students and see where you actually fit in. I mean, will the school be a next logical step towards your post-MBA goals
- GMAT is only one aspect of your application(I know you've heard this million times! :-D ), and essays and your quality of work ex matters too. So gaining some good leadership experience in community projects or at office will help a lot!
- Apply early!
- Focus on things that would differentiate you from the crowd (esp. Indian IT males)

Good luck!

Hey there,
Well, the question of retaking or not is a complex one, and I wrote a reaaaally long post about this here: to-retake-or-not-to-retake-that-is-the-question-indian-153716.html I think it might be of help to you, so you should check that out.

From the way you have written things, your prifle seems good albeit a bit 'standard'. But that might also be a bit your fault

What I mean is that the story of how you present yourself becomes who you ARE. If you present your work experience in one line "Indian IT male with 7 years WE" it's gonna make you sound standard. But that's why part of your job is to dig into your work and other experiences and to MAKE YOURSELF into something else, by finding those unique, impressive, or interesting points ,and presenting yourself as a complex, full, interesting person with a specific set of experiences, characteristics, goals...

Because as you know there are a LOT of Indian Male Tech applicants, buuuuuut you are more unique and more specific than that, and that would be a good approach for you to take.

I hope this helps, and if you have aaaaaany other questions at all, you let me know,

Best,
JF

Thanks a lot for the help and suggestions. It is really valuable. I am planning to retake it but at the back of my mind there is a thought "What if" . I am trying to remove that thought though.
